Predator Pro-Am Tour / Lindenhurst, NY

by Alison M. Fischer, NYCgrind.com

Daniel Dagotdot won the Predator Pro-Am Tour’s amateur division the weekend of September 17-18, while Oscar Bonilla closed a win in the open/pro division. The tour held its eleventh tour stop of the season at the Lindenhurst, NY, poolroom Mr. Cue Billiards on Long Island.

With a field of 56 players for both events, the $1,000-added tournament got underway early Saturday afternoon, and by Sunday evening, only two players remained in the winners’ bracket. Two of the area’s strongest young amateur players faced off in the hot seat match to see who would lock down a spot in the finals.

Long Island player Erin McManus, who had not competed all summer since the WPBA U.S. Open in June, faced off against Dagotdot in the hot seat match. McManus and Dagotdot had a close battle, which ended in Dagotdot’s favor 8-5.

Victor Nau, the Predator Tour’s current number-one-ranked player in the A+ class, fought through the one-loss side to take on McManus in the semifinals after he defeated Andrew Waggoner in the quarterfinals 10-5. McManus continued her strong play to win 9-7 and earn her spot in the finals for a rematch with Dagotdot. It was another close match between Dagotdot and McManus in the finals, but Dagotdot again prevailed, with the final score ending at 8-6.

In the one-day open/pro 10-ball event, Joey Korsiak earned the hot seat with a win over Justin Muller 8-5, Scott Murphy 8-4, and Tony Robles 8-6.

Oscar Bonilla fell into dead stroke after a first-round loss to Jorge Rodriguez 8-6 and went through the one-loss side to meet Tony Robles in the semifinals. With the score 5-4 in Bonilla’s favor, Robles came up dry on the break, and Bonilla calmly proceeded to run three racks and out for the right to play Korsiak for the championship. Bonilla was not to be denied as he soundly defeated Korsiak 11-7 in the finals to win the day.

Daniel Dagotdot won the Predator Pro-Am Tour’s amateur division the weekend of September 17-18, while Oscar Bonilla closed a win in the open/pro division.

42 Players turn out for the $500-added July Open 9-Ball Jam

Boynton Beach, Fla. (July 16, 2011) – The day paid off for some players who came out to the first men and women’s $500-added Open 9-Ball event hosted by the Flamingo Billiards Tour on Saturday at Slate Billiards in Boynton Beach, FL. Anthony Meglino of Tamarac, Florida, took the honors and $750 at the July Jam event which drew a variety of players from all around South Florida. Included in the special guest list was Mike Dechaine, in town to support friend and room owner Mike Bradford.

Mike Bradford, room owner; Curtis Kelley, 2nd, Anthony Meglino, winner, and John Foster, 3rd.

Meglino’s day was a breeze until he met up with veteran player John Foster, who quickly sent Meglino west 7-1. Not to be deterred, Meglino made it back to the semi-finals stopping FBT member Sue Roberts, 5-0, with a record four 9-ball combos. Meglino followed up by knocking out room owner Mike Bradford, 5-0, and Stan Ketchum, 5-1, to get to the semi-final match.
On the winner’s side of the bracket, Curtis Kelley made it to the hot seat ending John Foster’s winning day in a tight match that went to the hill. Foster, who earlier sent Meglino west, came back to the semi-final through the one-loss side only to have the favor returned by Meglino. Meglino also stopped David Broxson, 5-1, who earlier ended Mike Dechaine’s guest appearance at the event. Jerry Calderon was out early as well.

In the final race to 11, it just wasn’t the day for Kelley, who’s back in tournament mode after being on paternity leave for nine months. Meglino quickly took the lead, 8-3. Just as it looked like Kelley was going to make a come-back wining the next two matches to make it 8-5, Meglino took over and won the next three games and the event.

Some of the event’s matches can be viewed at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/billiardcommunity-com.

The FBT, a WPBA-Recognized Regional Tour, is the stepping stone to the WPBA for women in Florida who want to qualify for Women’s Professional Billiard
Association events. This is the first FBT-non-points 9-Ball event open to both women and men.

Many thanks again to room owners Mike Bradford and Joe Sistarelli, (www.billiardcommuntiy.com), for being great hosts and to Boynton Billiards (www.boyntonbilliards.com) for their support of the Flamingo Billiards Tour.

The event was hosted by Casper’s Billiards, San Leon, TX, and drew some of the top women players in pool vying for the WPPA U.S. Open qualifier spot.

Jennifer Kraber grabbed the qualifier over Orietta Strickland in the one-loss side, while on the winners’ side, it came down to Keeney versus Amanda Lampert and Ming Ng against Ricki Casper. Keeney won her match hill-hill, while Ng bested Casper 7-4. Lisa Marr was able to get another chance against Casper, who, on Saturday, bested Marr 7-0. Marr avenged this loss Sunday 7-4.

Petrosino continued her strong play by scoring another hill-hill win against Marr, leaving Marr with a fourth-place finish. However, it was over for Petrosino when Ng bested her 7-4 in the semifinals.

In the double-elimination final match, Ng looked like she would force a second set, as she reached the hill in the first set 6-1. Keeney had to refresh and dig deep to make the score hill-hill. In her semifinal match against Monica Webb, the score seesawed to 2-all in the short race to 7. Despite the crowd’s hopes of a close battle, it was all Corr as Webb was forced to sit in her chair and watch “The Irish Invader” run out time and again. The final score was 7-2 in Corr’s favor.

View the tournament brackets

The other semifinal match featured Ouschan going up against Kelly Fisher, the other undefeated player among the four. An unexpected scratch by Fisher gave Ouschan the first rack, and the Austrian ran with that momentum until she reached a 4-0 lead. But Fisher dug deep and fought her way back into the match, and soon the score was knotted at the hill 6-all. Despite that, though, it was Ouschan who advanced to the finals against Corr with a 7-6 win.

A cloud of tension surrounded the final match. Corr broke and ran out the first two racks to make her presence known. Ouschan countered by taking the next two—one after a miss by Corr on a 3-9 combo and one after Corr scratched on the 7 ball. They split the next two games, and then Corr took another two-rack lead after a couple of errors by Ouschan, making it 5-3. Another error by both players led to the score moving to 6-4 in Corr’s favor. At that point, though, Ouschan bore down. When Corr scratched on her next break, Ouschan swiftly dished up to draw within a game. She then broke and ran out to make it a hill-hill encounter. In the final rack, Ouschan smashed the rack and pocketed three balls on the break. Coolly she ran the remaining balls in under a minute to win the match 7-6 and take the title. With this victory Ouschan clinched the tour’s number-one spot on the rankings as well.

Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.

After the first 32 kick off the first round, the top 16 seeds come into play in the second. The winners of the first round advance to play the top seeds, while the remaining 16 cool their heels and await an opponent—the losers of the second round. Instead of a redraw at the final sixteen players, the field will narrow to four—two on the winners’ side and two on the one-loss side—before redrawing into the semifinal matches.

With the new format in place and only two rounds being played, so far the top seeds have come out as expected, with only a few upsets. Jennifer “9MM” Barretta upset junior champ Brittany Bryant in a double-hill match, with Bryant going off to face Melissa Rademakers in the next round on the one-loss side. Nicole Keeney came out on top of New York player Liz Ford 9-5, while Ewa Laurance surprised Melissa Little in another hill-hill match. And Kim White, promoter of the Lone Star Billiard Tour, upended Vivian “The Texas Tornado” Villareal in yet another double-hill match 9-8.

View the tournament brackets

The tour’s number-one seed, Jasmin Ouschan, is poised to play Julie “Motor Molly” Kelly in the next round of the winners’ bracket, and the number-two seed, Karen Corr, will play Line Kjorsvik. Another classic match-up will be between Ewa “The Striking Viking” Laurance and Jeanette Lee in the same bracket.

Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.
