U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships / Chesapeake, VA

by InsidePOOL Staff

The contest for the main prize at the 36th U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships is heating up in Chesapeake, VA, with only 8 players going into Friday’s matches without a loss and 24 players vying for their piece of the $175,000 prize fund.

Reigning champion Darren Appleton looks a good bet at this point—he has breezed through his first four opponents to match up with Johnny Archer, who won the Open in 1999. Archer put on a clinic in his evening match against Antonio Lining, holding the Filipino to 3 to win their match.

Shane Van Boening, champion in 2007, is still going strong after a close call over India’s Raj Hundal 11-9 to move on to best reigning world 9-ball champ Yukio Akagarima 11-8. Van Boening’s next challenge will come from Shawn Putnam, who overcame Hall of Famer Earl Strickland 11-8 earlier.

Japan can be proud of hometown hero Kenichi Uchigacki, who has triumphed over former winner Tommy Kennedy, Harvey Shognosh, Kevin Bailey, and Filipino Jundel Mazon to reach the final 8 without a scratch, only to face down formidable opponent Lee Vann Corteza 11-9. Uchigacki’s next opponent, Larry “The Truth” Nevel, earlier bested one of Europe’s best, Mark Gray, in a narrow 11-9 victory.

Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan had an easy day of it, first defeating Stan Shuffett 11-4 and then going to to whitewash fellow countryman Warren Kiamco 11-0. Pagulayan’s next match will be against former 14.1 champ Huidji See, who earlier sent Rodney Morris to the one-loss side 11-8 after Morris had just sent Nick Varner west 11-5.

Dennis Hatch is still alive, after ousting Hunter Lombardo 11-4 and then Chris Bartram 11-6. China Open champ Chris Melling was sent home after an 11-7 loss to Naoyuki Oi. Hall of Famer Nick Varner is still alive, having eliminated Raj Hundal 11-7, while Charlie Williams ousted two-time champion Mika Immonen 11-3.

The 36th installment of the prestigious U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships kicked off in Chesapeake, VA, October 16 at the Chesapeake Conference Center, where 251 players converged to vie for their share of the $50,000-added prize purse.

Past champions in attendance include Allen Hopkins, Earl Strickland, Johnny Archer, Ralf Souquet, Shane Van Boening, Mike Lebron, Gabe Owen, Alex Pagulayan, Nick Varner, and Tommy Kennedy.

Champion in 2001, Corey Deuel suffered a surprising first-round loss to Li Wen Lo 11-8, so if he intends to reclaim the title, he will have to do so from the one-loss side as he did in 2001.

Reigning champion Darren Appleton scored a bye in the first round and will play Robert Hart, who went double-hill with Mike Badstuebner and won, in the next round.

Japan is well-represented in this event, with top players such as Toru Kuribayashi, Kengo Matsumoto, Naoyuki Oi, and reigning world 9-ball champion Yukio Akagariyama. Kenichi Uchigaki won his first-round match over Tommy Kennedy 11-9 and will advance to play Harvey Shognosh in the next round.

Appleton is always a major threat to snap off a big event.

The live scoring will be posted at Inside POOL TV Live U.S. Open Scoringand the tournament brackets will be updated continuously and posted at:

U.S. Open 9-Ball Tournament Bracket 2

England also has a strong contingent at this year’s Open. In addition to Appleton, Chris Melling, the reigning China Open champion is here, as well as former world 9-ball champ Daryl Peach, Karl Boyes, Jason Shaw, and Mark Gray.

The Filipino factor seems to be less this year—former champ Alex Pagulayan is here, as is Antonio Gabica, Antonio Lining, and Lee Vann Corteza.

by InsidePOOL Staff

Larry “The Truth” Nevel took home the lion’s share of the prize fund when he won the Olhausen Billiards MaximBilliards.com Richard Sweet Memorial tournament July 3 over Johnny Archer. The event comprised several divisions.

The tournament kicked off Thursday evening with a $500 guaranteed 8-ball event that Josh Roberts won after besting Kenneth Wright, Alberto Rojas, Samuel Stewart, Nevel, Ricky Terrell, and Danny Smith to reach the finals, where he took first by defeating John Mcloed.

Nevel took home the lion’s share of the prize fund when he won the Olhausen Billiards MaximBilliards.com Richard Sweet Memorial tournament July 3 over Archer.

Friday drew 110 entrants to the $500 guaranteed 9-ball division, in which B.J. Ussery prevailed as he made his way through the single-elimination field over Willie Parks , Matt Ellsworth, Bo Bellew, Sean Davis, Jeff Hooks, Evan Lunde, and Nevel to claim the win.

The Olhausen Billiards MaximBilliards.com Richard Sweet Memorial tournament also hosted a $1,000 guaranteed APA-players-only 8-ball tournament that drew 43 players. Local favorite Dana Aft took home first place after she made her way across the bottom of the bracket undefeated.

The main event featured a $3,000 guaranteed 10-ball tournament with a double-elimination format and a guaranteed $1,000 first-place prize. The event drew 128 players and hosted the heavy hitters from around the area, including Archer, Tommy Kennedy, Shawn Putnam, Nevel, and Stevie Moore.

The finals featured a showdown between Archer and Nevel, with each player working their way to the finals from different ends of the brackets. Archer was sent to the one-loss side by Kennedy, where he faced down Putnam 7-5. This put Archer in the position to take revenge on Kennedy in the semifinals, which he pulled off hill-hill. In the finals Archer took the first set 7-6, but Nevel came back with a fury in the second to win it all 7-3.

Day One at the Masters Championship

The first round of the Masters had some familiar names in play. Earl Strickland plowed under Eddie Richards 8-1 and Josh Ulrich fared even better with an 8-0 win over Lary Phlegar. Eddie Abraham played a fine round against Ralf Souquet. leading at one point 5-3 and then 6-4 before Souquet, suffering from a nagging upper respiratory problem, finally found his stick and won 8-6. Randy LaBonte and Hunter Lombardo went to hill-hill before Lombardo managed to three-foul LaBonte for the 8-7 win and Eric Moore eluded Matt Krah 8-6. The Accu-Stats table featured a very close set between Jundel Mazon and Shaun WIlkie that had Mazon prevail 8-6. Jesse Engel took Nigel Francis out 8-4 and our last match found Chris Loar coming out ahead of Dave Grau 8-6.

Strickland posted an 8-1 victory over Eddie Richards in the first round of the Masters in Chesapeake, VA.

The second round of the day began with Warren Kiamco taking a forfeit from Jim Smith. Mike Dechaine whitewashed Gary Creasy 8-0 in a match where he barely set a foot wrong. The Accu-Stats match found Shane Van Boening taking care of business 8-4 over Michael Fuller while Scott Tollefson had his way 8-2 over Marc Vidal. Brandon Shuff is nursing a very sore ankle but still managed an easy win over Mike Harvey 8-2. Chris Orme defeated Ozzy Reynolds 8-4 and an hour later Shane Winters edged Jeremy Sossei 8-7 to finally finish the round.

The third round found us with another forfeit. Jose Parica failed to show for his match with Alex Pagulayan so the Lion got an easy progression to the next round. Charlie Williams showed his strength as he passed Bill Dunsmore 8-4 and Sam Monday pushed Cary Dunn aside 8-3. Rob Leeper defeated Tim Colvin 8-6 and Tommy Kennedy showed his stuff on the TV table by controlling Dave Bollman 8-6. Brian Brekke struggled early on against Jerome Rockwell but prevailed in the end 8-5.

The final round of the day found a few rollovers. Johnny Archer dumped Masafumi Mochizuki 8-3 and Shawn Putnam wrecked So Shaw 8-1. Mike Davis ruined Randy WHitehead’s day 8-1and Chris Futrell won over Aymen Neyaz 8-4. John Morra had a bit of a battle with Bill Duggan that he won 8-6 and our final match to end saw Stevie Moore taking down John Mitcheltree 8-4.

Some feature matches to look forward to on Tuesday include Warren Kiamco (who just won the all-around title at the US Bar Table Championships in Reno) facing the ever-strong Dennis Hatch and Shane Van Boening going up against Brandon Shuff.
