Brian Deska dominated the field at the Action Pool Tour’s August 13-14 event, besting Brandon Shuff in the finals for top honors. The tournament drew 40 players to Break Time Sports Pub and Grill in Salisbury, MD.

Brian Deska dominated the field at the Action Pool Tour’s August 13-14 event, besting Brandon Shuff in the finals for top honors.

On the winners’ side, Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie defeated Kevin West 8-4, while Deska took down Josh Brothers 8-5. The hot seat match between Deska and Wilkie lived up to the billing, with Deska narrowly escaping with an 8-7 win and a trip to the finals. Over on the one-loss side, Chip Klein squeaked by APT Director Ozzy Reynolds 8-7 with a terrific long cut shot on the final 10 ball, while Shuff came back from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Butch Weimer 8-6.

After coming back from the dead against Weimer, Shuff picked up momentum and began to steamroll his way through the bracket by eliminating Brothers 8-6, West 8-2, and finally Wilkie 8-2. This set the stage for finals, in which Shuff would have had to best Deska twice. Shuff won the first set easily 8-4; however, Deska came out strong in the second set and took an early 3-0 lead. Shuff fought back, and after racks were traded back and forth, the match was tied 7-7 with Shuff having the final break. Shuff crushed the rack, but nothing found a pocket. Deska came to the table with what looked like a routine run-out. He held his composure and carefully dissected the table for the win.

Results:
1st Brian Deska $850
2nd Brandon Shuff $500
3rd Shaun Wilkie $300
4th Kevin West $200
5th Chip Klein $140
Josh Brothers
7th Ozzy Reynolds $100
Planet Pool Tour / Parksville, MD

by Jose Burgos

Northeast threat Matt Krah capsized the 40-player field that tried for top honors at the July 16-17 stop on the Planet Pool Tour. Krah faced off against Ryan “The Genie Man” McCreesh in the finals of the event, which was hosted by Top Hat Cue Club in Parksville, MD.

Northeast threat Matt Krah capsized the 40-player field that tried for top honors at the July 16-17 stop on the Planet Pool Tour.

McCreesh worked his magic on the top half of the bracket, scoring wins over Eric Perry 9-2, Brett Stottlemyer 9-4, Kevin West 9-4, and then got past Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie hill-hill to reach the hot seat match. Krah met him there after dealing with Don Steele 9-7, Garcia Bouie 9-5, Rick Glasscock 9-4, and Alan Duty 9-4. The winners’ side final ended up being a lopsided match that Krah won easily 9-4, sending McCreesh to the west side of the chart.

Wilkie, who had just bested West in the quarterfinals, awaited McCreesh. The semifinals were too close to call until the end, when McCreesh sent Wilkie home in third place 7-5. The double-elimination finals were a rematch from the earlier hot seat match. As before, McCreesh was not quite up to the challenge presented by Krah, who won the title 9-7.

Results:
1st Matt Krah $1,100
2nd Ryan Mcreesh $625
3rd Shaun Wilkie $400
4th Kevin West $200
5th Alan Duty $150
Sean Morgan
7th Josh Brothers $100

The Action Pool Tour (APT) held its inaugural event at Top Hat Cue Club in Parkville, MD, June 11-12 and attracted an exceptional field of 58 participants. Matt Krah went undefeated through the field to take the title, fending off a charge from Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie in the finals.

Day 1 provided some great match-ups and a few surprises. Kevin West suffered an 8-7 first-round loss to Lay Thammavong, while Wilkie came dangerously close to a second-round loss to Greg Sabins. By the end of the first day, four players—Brett Stottlemyer, Wilkie, Rick Moliniero, and Krah—remained in the winners’ bracket and eight players—Alvin Thomas, Ozzy Reynolds, Mark Ford, Sean Morgan, Kevin West, Rob Metz, Alan Duty, and Michael Wong—remained on the one-loss side.

Pictured left to right: Ozzy Reynolds, Matt Krah, Shaun Wilkie, Rick Moliniero

The second day of the event began with Wilkie handing Stottlemyer his first loss 8-3, while Krah dominated Moliniero 8-2. This set up the hot seat match between Wilkie and Krah. The match was close throughout, but with the score tied 7-7, Krah came through in the end to win the final game and secure his spot in the finals.

On the west side, Moliniero displayed some terrific shooting and stunned Stottlemyer 8-3 to advance to the semifinals against Wilkie, which Wilkie won convincingly 8-2. In the finals, a rematch of the hot seat match, Wilkie had to best Krah twice to take the win in the true double-elimination format. But Krah would have no part of it. He seemed to work the cue ball around the table effortlessly and took the final match by a score of 8-2.

Results:
1st Matt Krah $1,000
2nd Shaun Wilkie	$600
3rd Rick Moliniero	$350
Eddie Abraham played a fine round against Ralf Souquet. leading at one point 5-3 and then 6-4 before Souquet, suffering from a nagging upper respiratory problem, finally found his stick and won 8-6. Randy LaBonte and Hunter Lombardo went to hill-hill before Lombardo managed to three-foul LaBonte for the 8-7 win and Eric Moore eluded Matt Krah 8-6. The Accu-Stats table featured a very close set between Jundel Mazon and Shaun WIlkie that had Mazon prevail 8-6. Jesse Engel took Nigel Francis out 8-4 and our last match found Chris Loar coming out ahead of Dave Grau 8-6.

Strickland posted an 8-1 victory over Eddie Richards in the first round of the Masters in Chesapeake, VA.

The second round of the day began with Warren Kiamco taking a forfeit from Jim Smith. Mike Dechaine whitewashed Gary Creasy 8-0 in a match where he barely set a foot wrong. The Accu-Stats match found Shane Van Boening taking care of business 8-4 over Michael Fuller while Scott Tollefson had his way 8-2 over Marc Vidal. Brandon Shuff is nursing a very sore ankle but still managed an easy win over Mike Harvey 8-2. Chris Orme defeated Ozzy Reynolds 8-4 and an hour later Shane Winters edged Jeremy Sossei 8-7 to finally finish the round.

The third round found us with another forfeit. Jose Parica failed to show for his match with Alex Pagulayan so the Lion got an easy progression to the next round. Charlie Williams showed his strength as he passed Bill Dunsmore 8-4 and Sam Monday pushed Cary Dunn aside 8-3. Rob Leeper defeated Tim Colvin 8-6 and Tommy Kennedy showed his stuff on the TV table by controlling Dave Bollman 8-6. Brian Brekke struggled early on against Jerome Rockwell but prevailed in the end 8-5.

The final round of the day found a few rollovers. Johnny Archer dumped Masafumi Mochizuki 8-3 and Shawn Putnam wrecked So Shaw 8-1. Mike Davis ruined Randy WHitehead’s day 8-1and Chris Futrell won over Aymen Neyaz 8-4. John Morra had a bit of a battle with Bill Duggan that he won 8-6 and our final match to end saw Stevie Moore taking down John Mitcheltree 8-4.

Some feature matches to look forward to on Tuesday include Warren Kiamco (who just won the all-around title at the US Bar Table Championships in Reno) facing the ever-strong Dennis Hatch and Shane Van Boening going up against Brandon Shuff.

The banks semifinal and final matches were meant to be the evening of January 24; however; but there are too many players to finish then, and the One-Pocket Hall of Fame banquet is the following evening, as is the $10,000-added Fatboy Challenge. At this time it is thought that the banks finals will take place January 26, with the one-pocket finishing up January 27.

The 9-ball banks division of the 13th Annual Derby City Classic has been placed on temporary hold, as the one-pocket event gets underway in earnest.

In the ninth round of the banks event, only two players remain without any losses. Francisco Bustamante, the most recent BCA Hall of Fame inductee, survived the ninth round unscathed, eliminating Brandon Shuff from the event.
