After suffering a close 9-7 loss Saturday night to Johnathan “Hennessee” Pinegar in the final four of the winners’ side of the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship, Shane Van Boening came back through the one-loss side to win it all. Van Boening took this title in 2008 over Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie, and this year his finals victim was Pinegar.

His defeat in the winners’ side must have motivated “The South Dakota Kid,” for he went on Saturday evening to whitewash Northeast terror Dennis Hatch, sending the Mosconi Cup VIP home in fifth place. Sunday morning Van Boening went up against former world 9-ball champion Thorsten Hohmann.

Hohmann hung with the 2007 Player of the Year at the start of the match, but Van Boening reached a two-game lead to go up 5-3 in the race to 9. However, Hohmann was able to even the score at 5-all and then 6-all. A safety battle over the 8 ball in the next rack saw Hohmann beautifully thin it in, and then a break and run put the German on the hill 8-6. Another couple of safety exchanges saw Van Boening join Hohmann on the hill. In the final rack, Van Boening pocketed the 10 ball on the break. It did not count as a win, but he was able to continue shooting. He proceeded to run out and win the match 9-8.

The bout with Hohmann was Van Boening’s closest of the day. He went on to challenge Corey “The Prince of Pool” Deuel, who had suffered a 9-3 loss to Pinegar in the hot seat match the night before and was waiting in the semifinals. Deuel and Van Boening split the first four racks, but it wasn’t long before it became apparent that Deuel was having an off day, while Van Boening was unstoppable. Several errors by Deuel added to Van Boening’s score, and several break and run-outs did as well. When Deuel came up empty on his break in the final rack, it was all over. Van Boening had a wide-open table and negotiated through it easily, winning 9-4.

After suffering a close 9-7 loss Saturday night to Pinegar in the final four of the winners’ side of the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship, Van Boening came back through the one-loss side to win it all.

The finals comprised an extended single race to 13, with Van Boening’s prior loss erased. Pinegar jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a quick 2-10 combo in the first and a missed 8 ball by Van Boening in the second. But Van Boening not only drew even, he won six racks in a row to take a commanding 6-2 lead, charging Pinegar for every small mistake. With his massive break in full effect, Van Boening was an unstoppable force, and though Pinegar managed to gather another few racks to put under his belt, with the alternate-break format, the debt he accrued was almost insurmountable.

At 8-5 in Van Boening’s favor, Pinegar scratched on the 2 ball, and Van Boening took that rack and then the next when Pinegar missed the 2 ball. Now in full stride, Van Boening broke and ran the next to make it 11-5. Pinegar had the break next but came up dry. It was his last time at the table. Van Boening cleared that table to reach the hill and then, with his break splitting the rack wide open, he dropped the 1 ball on his final break and ran out to win 13-5.

Johnathan Pinegar is sitting pretty in the hot seat of the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo in King of Prussia, PA.

Pinegar started off going up against Johnny “The Scorpion” Archer in the final eight on the winners’ side, coming back from an early deficit to defeat Archer double-hill. He then advanced to play Shane Van Boening, a past champion of this event. Van Boening was just off a 9-6 defeat of Shawn Putnam.

Pinegar took the lead in his match against “The South Dakota Kid,” but Van Boening knotted the score at 5 apiece and then moved ahead 7-5. However, Pinegar countered, taking the next two racks and then the next two again for the 9-7 win.

Pinegar is sitting pretty in the hot seat of the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship at the Super Billiards Expo in King of Prussia, PA.

Advancing to the hot seat match, Pinegar then played Corey Deuel, who had just sent Thorsten Hohmann west 9-5. It was fairly even at the beginning, but at 4-2 Pinegar, Deuel had an open table and scratched. Pinegar took full advantage and surged ahead, reaching a 7-3 lead. It was Deuel’s break, and he scratched, leaving a dead 3-10 combo. Pinegar coolly took ball in hand and ran out to the combo to win 9-3.

Returning for Sunday’s first match will be Van Boening and Hohmann in the quarterfinals. After his loss to Pinegar, Van Boening went on to deliver a whitewashing to Dennis Hatch, who had just eliminated Mike Davis 9-7. Hohmann, after his match with Deuel, ousted Putnam 9-7. The winner of their match will play Deuel in the semifinals.

Some exciting matches went off at the Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship Friday. The winners’ side was whittled down to eight players, and in a feature match-up, Corey “The Prince of Pool” Deuel went up against Charlie Williams. The match seesawed to a double-hill contest with Deuel breaking. He came up empty, but Williams played safe on the 1 ball. Deuel played a two-rail kick and contacted the 1 ball but left a combo. Williams was on his way to victory but rattled the 6 ball in the corner pocket, and Deuel was easily able to clear the table to win 9-8.

But the most talked-about match was surely the one on the one-loss side between defending champion John Schmidt and Earl Strickland. Schmidt came out of the gate like a bolt, quickly gaining a 6-1 lead. At that point, Strickland caught fire. He not only caught Schmidt at 6, he passed him to reach the hill at 8-6. Schmidt won the next rack to postpone his fate, but it was all Strickland in the next as he dished up to win 9-7.

Allen Hopkins’ 18th Annual Super Billiards Expo kicked off March 18, with hundreds of players signed up for the myriad tournaments that will be taking place throughout the weekend. The Expo is held annually at the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, PA.

The Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship, one of the main draws at the yearly event, began with a full field of 64 players. This event’s format is a race to 9, double-elimination, alternating break, with $20,000 added.

Defending champion John “Mr. 403” Schmidt, who won last year’s event over Corey Deuel in the finals, won his first-round match tonight, defeating Shannon Murphy 9-6. His next match will be against Filipino Al Lapena, who delivered a stunning 9-1 blow to Joey Testa earlier.

There have been a few upsets in the event already, including a 9-7 defeat of 2009 Player of the Year Mika Immonen by Ralph Eckert, innovator of the PAT Training System. Immonen immediately went to the one-loss side and eliminated Danny “Kid Delicious” Basavich 9-1. Also, Ryan “The Genie Man” McCreesh delivered a first-round loss to Rodney Morris 9-5, while Jeremy Sossei sent Earl Strickland to the left side of the chart 9-7. From there, Strickland dealt Bob Weimar a donut 9-0.

The 18th Annual Super Billiards Expo kicked off March 18, with hundreds of players signed up for the myriad tournaments that will be taking place throughout the weekend.

Ronnie “Everything’s Funny When You’re Winning Big Money” Wiseman and Steve Moore fought a battle that went double-hill before Wiseman edged past Moore 9-8. That was the only hill-hill match of the first round.

Player of the Year for 2008, Shane Van Boening is going strong, having won his first match 9-2 against Raj Vannala. He will go up against New York’s Frankie Hernandez in the next round, as Hernandez just defeated Rich Musser 9-6. Former world 9-ball champion Thorsten Hohmann sent Northeast player Brandon Shuff to the west side 9-2 and will go on to face Onur Berber, who defeated Jarrod Clowery 9-3, in the next round.

Blend of Youth and Experience Attempting To Regain Cup

Matchroom Sport can announce three more players to join Johnny Archer on Team USA as they attempt to win the Mosconi Cup outright for the first time since 2005. As expected, the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked players on the BCA Points List at the conclusion of last week’s US Open take their place and they are Los Angeles’ Oscar Dominguez and Corey Deuel from Columbus, Ohio.

They will be joined by the third highest ranked American player, Shane Van Boening, who will be making his third appearance in the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup which takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas from 10th to 13th December.

Dominguez, a 24 year-old from Van Nuys, caps a great year that saw him win the Turning Stone Classic XIII in August and complete a high finish at the Pro Players Championship.

Son of Californian pool legend Ernesto, Dominguez is thrilled to be pulling on a Team USA shirt.

As expected, the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked players on the BCA Points List at the conclusion of last week’s US Open take their place and they are Los Angeles’ Dominguez and Deuel from Columbus, Ohio.

“I am honored to be representing my country. For me to earn my spot through points is amazing and it was actually my goal at the beginning of 2009, so I’m very happy to have accomplished it,” said Dominguez.

“It is people like Ralf, Niels, and Mika whom I learned so much from and now I get to play against them in the biggest, most prestigious event in the world.

“This opportunity makes it all very special to me. I am looking forward to the challenge and playing with America’s finest, instead of against. Having played competitive basketball all my life, I know how to work as a team and I think this experience will help me. I feel Team USA has the ability to win and I will be training hard from now on for this event.

“I will not promise victory, but I will promise that I put every ounce of energy and concentration to bring the Mosconi Cup back to US soil,” added Dominguez.

For Corey Deuel, who will be 32 when the event rolls round in December, it will be his sixth Mosconi Cup and he sports an enviable record in the event of 14 wins from 23 matches.

“I’m delighted to be back in the Mosconi Cup and will be giving it my all in the quest to get that trophy back to where it belongs,” said Deuel.

Finally, Shane Van Boening earns a third chance to win the Mosconi Cup after two unsuccessful outings in 2007 and ’08.

“The Mosconi Cup is the most entertaining, unforgettable tournaments you can ever play in and I am very honoured to once again be representing the USA and will do my best,” said Van Boening.

The final spot will go to the player who amasses the most votes in a public poll set to take place on the pages of MatchRoom Sport.

This will be from a selected list of eight candidates and will be up and running week commencing Monday 2nd November.

The 2009 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup takes place from Thursday to Sunday 10-13 December at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Live in its entirety on Sky Sports in the UK, the event features two five-man teams representing Europe and the USA doing battle in a series of singles and doubles matches. Now in its 16th year, the Americans hold a 10-4 lead with one tied match in 2006.
