Mezz Women’s Tour / New York City, NY

by Jose Burgos

Supadra Geronimo wreaked revenge on Gail Glazebrook to snatch victory from her in the finals of the July 23 installment of the Mezz Women’s Tour. The event was held at Amsterdam Billiards and Bar in New York City, NY, where a small but strong field came out to play.

Supadra Geronimo wreaked revenge on Gail Glazebrook to snatch victory from her in the finals of the July 23 installment of the Mezz Women’s Tour.

Glazebrook whizzed through the top half of the bracket, notching wins over Caroline Pao 7-4, Jennifer Epstein 7-3, and Allie Shaffer 7-5. Leading the bottom half of the bracket was Geronimo with wins over Debra Pritchett 7-3 and Emily Duddy 7-1. The following hot seat match was a close one, with Glazebrook taking control late on her way to a 7-5 victory and sending Geronimo to the one-loss side.

Awaiting Geronimo was Yomaylin Feliz. Their semifinal match went hill-hill, with Geronimo finally eking out the 7-6 win. In the double-elimination final match, Geronimo was faced with the task of besting Glazebrook twice for the win. The first set went double-hill, with Geronimo leveling the playing field. She took the lead at the start of the second set and charged on to a 6-4 victory.

Results:
1st Supadra Geronimo $400
2nd Gail Glazebrook $200
3rd Yomaylin Feliz $100

Here’s what everyone involved had to say about George Sansouci:

“George Ginky Sansouci was not only a great friend and godfather to my son. He was an inspiration to players of all levels and taught us that there is no limit to what we can achieve on the green felt as long as we are willing to go that extra mile. I am truly honored to do this for George and his family as he always was and always will be a legend and an inspiration to all of us.”

George “Ginky” Sansouci was not only a great player, he was also smart, witty, supportive, loyal, and a great ambassador for the game of pool. This tournament will be a fitting tribute to one of New York’s greatest pool players.”

Greg Hunt – Amsterdam Billiards

“Ginky was one of our most accomplished players winning more Open events than any other player in our history and winning the coveted Player of the Year 4 consecutive years in the 90′s. And so it is with mixed emotions, both grief and pride, that we partake in the cooperative effort to memorialize George “Ginky” SanSouci; an offspring of the Tri-State Tour, who matured into the great player we all loved.”

John Leyman – Tri-State Tour Director

“Ginky was a good friend and a remarkable player who will be missed greatly. It is an honor for Mezz USA and the Mezz Tour to be a part of a memorial tournament to tribute all that Ginky has given to the game of pool and New York City.”

Caroline Pao – Mezz USA & Mezz Tour

Special thanks to a couple of Ginky’s closest friends Gregg McAndrews, Joel Schapiro and Mark Pantovic for stepping up to add $1,000 each and to Amsterdam Billiards owner Greg Hunt for adding $2,000 to make it a $5,000 added event! $2,500 will go towards the ABCD event and $2,500 will go towards the Open/Pro.

My goal was to make it a $5,000 added or more event. If anyone is interested in adding money to this special event, please contact Tony Robles at TonyRoblesNYC@aol.com.

Ginky’s family will be there at some point on Saturday to watch the event.

My good friends below will be at the event selling Ginky Memorabilia.

David Padilla will be selling the Ginky armbands that have become very popular. Anyone interested in ordering some armbands prior to the event should contact David immediately at davidpadilla714@gmail.com

Jimmy Martinez will also be there to sell limited edition Ginky shirts.

“R2BR which stands for Refusing to be Regular is truly honored to produce the commemorative t-shirt for George ‘Ginky’ SanSouci in limited edition. This shirt will be the first in a series for a newly launched NY Pool design line. Ginky represented the best that the New York City pool scene has to offer and was an individual that pushed the envelope from regular to extraordinary. R2BR has captured that spirit in a distinctive design.”

Jimmy Martinez

Mika Immonen, recently crowned Player of the Year for 2009, took off the Mezz Pro-Am Tour’s February 21 stop, defeating Eddie Abraham in the finals. The $1,000-added stop was hosted by Atlantic City Billiard Club in Egg Harbor, NJ, and drew a field of 50.

Abraham led the top half of the bracket, besting Mike Conway 7-3 and Rob Palm 7-2 before going double-hill with Immonen. He squeaked past the Finn 7-6 and went on to defeat Phil Wines 7-5 and Joey Testa 7-5. Leading the bottom half of the bracket was Victor Nau, who notched victories over Jerry Russo 7-3, Tom Bow 7-6, Shaun Wilkie 7-4, Caroline Pao 7-3, and Liz Ford 7-6.

Abraham and Nau collided in the hot seat match, and Abraham took control right from the start. He handled Nau easily, winning 7-3 to advance to the finals. Waiting for Nau on the west side of the chart was Immonen. Another lopsided match ensued, but with Immonen advancing this time 7-3.

In the true double-elimination final match, Immonen had to best Abraham twice to win. Abraham took an early 4-1 lead in the first set, but Immonen turned the tables and came back to win 7-5. The players traded the lead in the second set, but it was Immonen who pulled away late to win the match 7-4.

The Mezz Pro-Am Tour’s first stop went off with a bang, hosted by Drexeline Billiards in Drexel Hill, PA, January 31. A strong field of 53 players came out, including Eddie Abraham, Shaun Wilkie, and Matt Krah, but Ignacio Chavez and Joey Testa took home top honors.

Chavez led the top half of the bracket with wins over Caroline Pao 7-2, Abraham 7-3, Josh Brothers 7-4, Wilkie 7-1, and Adam Kielar 7-4. Leading the bottom half of the bracket was Testa, with wins over Sharon O’Hanlon 7-1, John Graziano 7-0, Gregg McAndrews 7-2, and Victor Nau 7-3.

Testa and Chavez matched up in the hot seat match, with Testa pulling away late to win 7-4. Waiting for Chavez on the one-loss side was Nau, coming fresh from a win over Brothers. But Nau’s momentum wasn’t enough to carry him through to the finals, as it was all Chavez, who easily won 7-2.

In the true double-elimination finals, it was Testa versus Chavez. In order for Chavez to win the event, he would have to best Testa twice. However, both players decided to be co-champions and split first place.

Vidal led the top half of the bracket with wins over Caroline Pao 7-5, Tony Lian 7-3, and Nau 7-3. Leading the bottom half the bracket was Chamat with wins over Barry Banks 7-4, Jorge Rodriquez 7-5, Miller 7-1, and Michael Wong 7-1.

Vidal and Chamat met up in the match for the hot seat. It was a close call, but Chamat pulled off the 7-5 win, sending Vidal to the one-loss side. Nau was waiting for Vidal in the semifinal match. Another close call, but this time it was Vidal who won 7-5 to return to the finals and a rematch with Chamat. In the true double-elimination finals, Vidal had to best Chamat twice to win the event. Two hill-hill matches later, it was Vidal standing in the winner’s circle.
