Chamberlain Official Pool and Table Allison Fisher Heads UK at Taobao World Mixed Doubles

Hangzhou, China – Chamberlain Tables has been selected as this year’s Official Table of the Taobao World Mixed Doubles. The top rated table company will feature fantastic international stars competing on its equipment next week, including 15x World Champion Allison Fisher of England! All the players will be joining on November 30th to December 2,2011 at Jiebai Mall in Hangzhou,China. Chamberlain joins Taobao.com, one of the world’s top 20 most visited internet sites, as one of the top sponsors of the event. The combination of Taobao, Chamberlain Tables, 9-Club Entertainment, and Dragon Promotions will secure major TV and media for the event, meaning more people will watch the World Mixed Doubles than any other billiards event in China!

Allison Fisher, the most legendary woman’s player in history, will play her first mixed doubles match in decades. But she is up to the task, and has a great track record. She was a 3x Snooker World Mixed Doubles Champion. She will be playing with UK #1 Craig Osborne. Osborne has …..They take on Team Philippines strong Lee Van Corteza and Iris Ranola. Lee Van is a former Philippines #1 while Ranola is a silver medalist at the Women’s US Open. This will be one of the highlighted marquee TV matches on November 30th.

“I have won in mixed doubles before in Snooker. At that time I had the greatest partner, Steve Davis. We were three times the World Mixed doubles champions in Snooker”, said Allison. This will be her first time ever playing mixed doubles in pool.

Craig was asked about his feelings concerning the World Mixed Doubles and the choice of his partner.

Fisher, the most legendary woman's player in history, will play her first mixed doubles match in decades.

“Well, what do i need to say about Allison that has not been said a million times over – What a class act she is! It’s an absolute pleasure to be partnering a legend in the pool world! I was invited to play with Allison in the event and just couldnt turn it down. On top of an opportunity to represent England in a great event. These opportunities do not come up very often, so it’s really impossible to refuse!”

The other Britain duet will be none other than the reigning Women’s World 10-Ball Champion Kelly Fisher and her partner Tommy Donlon, former UK #1. They will face up against Team USA’s Shanelle Loraine and Max Eberle. It is the premiere appearance of the USA duo in China. The match will take place on November 30th.

“I have played many times in mixed doubles before at English 8-ball including winning the world title in it. This time I couldnt wish for a better partner… Kelly is on fire at the moment!” said Tommy Donlon.

“We are really honored that we were given the opportunity to sponsor the event. It’s going to be a really amazing show for the sport in China. And it’s an additional honor to be affiliated with such respected international companies such as Taobao, Predator, Master, Aramith and Simonis. We hope this event stays in China for a long time”, says Li Li. Chamberlain Tables was founded in 1996 and was named after Neville Chamberlain, who was credited as the inventor of snooker.

“Chamberlain is one of best run and most respected names in Asia. We are fortunate to have them involved. No doubt, Chamberlain is one of my most favorite table manufacturers”, said Wang Di, President of 9-Club Entertainment.

The World Mixed Doubles will have 28 hours of original TV programming. The last event they produced for ESPN aired for 45 days straight daily. Dragon Promotions was voted the #2 Most Influential Company in the Sport of Billiards by an international survey of the billiard industry. They have produced over 100 events worldwide for the past 10 years.< Read more ...

Billiards Events Enters Round of 16

Story and Photo
by Ted Lerner

(Doha, Qatar)– Defending champion Francisco Bustamante of the Philippines barely hung on in his round of 32 match against relative unknown Indonesian player Setiawan Riyan, escaping with an 11-10 victory to move into the round of 16 at the World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Playing on the TV table, Bustamante looked to be cruising along as he led Setiwan 9-4. In the 14th frame, however, Bustamante was distracted by a press photographer snapping pictures nearby. From there on, the Hall of Famer seemed to lose his composure, and descended into a foul mood, as Setiwan slowly chipped away at the lead. Bustamante managed to get the score line to 10-7, but then made a handful of uncharacteristic mistakes that allowed the Indonesian back in the match. The Filipino great broke in the final rack and prevailed after Setiawan scratched after trying to escape a safety.

The defending champion only had five minutes to gather himself to do battle in the round of 16 with compatriot and world number 1 ranked player Dennis Orcullo. Orcullo, who desperately wants to win this title, earlier defeated upstart Filipino Marlon Caneda, 11-6 who had defeated Efren Reyes the previous night.

Earlier in the day inside the Al Sadd Sports Club there was plenty of thrilling drama in several matches to determine the final 16 players. In an all- Filipino shootout, Carlo Biado defeated Lee Van Corteza in an 11-10 scorcher. The first half of the match was tight, until Biado pulled away to go up 8-5. Corteza stormed back to take a 9-8 lead and was just about to go on the hill when he missed a makeable 9-ball. The match went to a sudden death rack and Biado kept Corteza in his chair for the win.

Biado now faces Japan’s hot Yukio Akakariyama in the round of 16.

Biado now faces Japan’s hot Yukio Akakariyama in the round of 16, which began at 3pm local time (GMT + 3 hours.) Akakariyama, who recently made it to the semi finals of the World 10 ball championship in Manila, defeated Croatia’s Carlo Dalmatin 11-8.

In what could be one of the biggest surprises of the tournament so far, Britain’s Mark Gray took out compatriot Chris Melling in another 11-10 thriller. Gray knew he would have to play perfect pool as Melling has lately been the hottest player on the planet. The 37 year old ex snooker player did just that, and it was all he needed to barely squeak by. It was the second straight hill-hill victory over a major scalp for Gray, after he defeated Taiwan’s Kuo Po Cheng yesterday. Gray now plays the Philippines Antonio Gabica in the round of 16. Gabica, who lives and works in Qatar as a coach of the national team, outlasted Japan’s Naoyuki Oi, 11-6.

In other matches in the round of 32, the USA’s Shane Van Boening continued to impress as he manhandled the very capable Chang Jung Lin of Taiwan, 11-5. Boening moves on for a quality matchup with current US Open Champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain. Appleton earlier defeated the Philippines Alan Cuartero 11-4.

Germany’s Ralf Souquet continued to play very strong pool as he easily defeated Poland’s Mariusz Skoeneczy, 11-2. Souquet plays the Philippines Vicencio Tanio, who beat Lo Li Wen of Japan 11-6.

The Philippine veteran quietly surged ahead, beating Roman Hybler of the Czech Republic 11-5. Lining faces Japan’s Toru Koribayashi, who easily defeated the USA’s Hunter Lombardo, 11-4.

2007 World 9-ball champion Daryl Peach put in another blistering performance, waylaying Taiwan’s Fu Chei Wei, 11-1. That set up a round of 16 showdown with Ko Pin Yi of Taiwan, who easily beat France’s Stephen Cohen 11-3.

Ko’s teammate Chang Yu Lun also emerged victorious with an quality win against England’s Scott Higgins. Chang now faces the Philippines Ronnie Alcano in the round of 16. Alcano, the 2006 World 9-ball champion, came back from a 7-2 deficit, the defeat Raj Hundal of India, 11-9.

PERFECT 9-BALL, SUPREME CONFIDENCE BRING THE BRIT AND CHINESE-TAIPEI UPSTART TO THE BRINK OF GLORY IN CHINA OPEN

Story and Photo by Ted Lerner

(Shanghai, China)–Two relative unknowns on the 9-ball circuit. Two players playing lights out billiards. One sure to be entertaining final.

Britain’s Chris Melling and Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Kai Lan both played perfect 9-ball pool Sunday morning in Shanghai as they each emphatically cruised into the finals of the 3rd annual China Open in Shanghai to be played later today.

In the first semi-final Melling defeated the Netherland’s Niels Feijen 11-7. In the second semi-final Hsu surprised everyone with an amazing 11-2 drubbing of former double world champion Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines.

Britain’s Chris Melling and Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Kai Lan both played perfect 9-ball pool Sunday morning in Shanghai as they each emphatically cruised into the finals of the 3rd annual China Open in Shanghai to be played later today.

Melling picked up the express train where he got off yesterday after taking down the Philippines Lee Van Corteza and then German’s Thorsten Hohmann. The 32 year old Brit and former two time world champion in English 8-ball is on fire right now, playing with supreme confidence and the belief that he can’t lose.

He needed that rock solid mind set too as Feijen came to win as well. The two Europeans broke and ran three out of the first four racks in the alternate break format. But no matter what Feijen threw at Melling, there was always an answer coming back. And quickly at that, as one mistake against the fast playing Brit these days means opponents pay a hefty price.

The pair split the first 8 racks and then Melling stepped on the gas, capitalizing on every single error by the Dutchman. In rack 9, Feijen made two difficult full table pots, then made a small mistake and from there the big Brit never looked back. Melling pounced on one Feijen mistake in the next rack for a two game lead. In the subsequent rack, the fast playing Melling played a great safety, which forced Feijen in to leaving an open shot, and Melling cleared again for a three game lead.

The same thing happed in rack 12. An error by Feijen and, just like that, Melling was up 8-4 lead. Feijen didn’t lie down, though, and stopped the bleeding with two successive racks to pull within two. Just as all champions do, however, they turn up the heat when the pressure is coming from all sides and the finish line is in sight.

Melling would simply not be denied. He broke and ran to move up 9-6. Feijen did the same in the 16th rack, then Melling countered with another break and run to move to the hill. In the final frame, Feijen left the two ball open, and Melling potted a 3-9 combo for the 11-7 win and a well earned spot in the finals.

“I played perfect that match,” Melling said as he walked off the TV table. “If I’m on I can beat anyone. Somebody is going to have to play very well to beat me. I never made one mistake.”

“I played pretty good,” Feijen said. “He just outshot me. He never missed a shot. Chris was the better man today.”

Melling, who’s only been playing professional 9-ball for two years, is clearly going to be very difficult to beat as he is oozing confidence on and off the table.

“I love the atmosphere of the TV table,” he said. “I love playing under pressure.”

Going into the second semi-final, most people figured that Hsu Kun Lai would eventually run out of gas, especially since this complete unknown entity out of pool powerhouse Chinese Taipei had never been in this kind of big time situation before. And now here he was on the TV table, and playing a double world champion in Alcano. Instead the exact opposite happened. The 22 year old Hsu looked like the confident veteran and Alcano looked like he had never been in a big time tournament match.

Hsu won the lag and came storming out, breaking and running to grab the early lead. In the next rack Alcano left the one ball open and Hsu ran out. Hsu broke and cleared in rack three. In the next rack Alcano missed an easy 9-ball. Then Hsu broke and ran again. In matter of minutes the upstart had a 5-0 lead.

Alcano ran the next rack but he was never a Read more ...

On Thursday Raj Hundal of India had both at the World Pool Billiards Association (WPA) World 8-Ball Championship. He began great, destroying Konstantin Stepanov of Russia 9-0 in a perfect match where he broke and ran the set. Stepanov never had a single chance at the table as Hundal won 9-0 to progress. But then the tables turned on him and Joven Alba of the Philippines eliminated him from the tournament 9-7.

Hundal destroyed Stepanov of Russia 9-0 in a perfect match where he broke and ran the set.

This was a day of joy and heartbreak for many. In this single-elimination stage any loss means the end of the road. US Open 9-Ball Champion Darren Appleton survived the day by overcoming Huidje See 9-3. Others in his section of the chart to make it into Friday included Bashar Hussain and Ronnie Alcano. Alcano had to defeat Oliver Ortmann 9-6 while Hussain ended the run of Salah Al Remway 9-5. The next section found legendary player Ralf Souquet escaping Joven Bustamante 9-7only to then fall victim to Nick Van Den Berg 9-1. Omaral Shaheene won over Rudolfo Luat 9-5 and then gave similar treatment to Manuel Gama 9-4 to keep his hopes alive.

View the brackets

Niels Feijen is having a good week. He is still in it via his wins over Do Hoang Quan 9-7 and Rodney Morris 9-2. And Oliver Medinilla also continues his quest as he rolled over Vilmos Foldes 9-5. Chang Jun Lin is still here. He defeated Roberto Gomez 9-6 while David Alcaide put down both Naoyuki Oi (9-3)and Lee Van Corteza (9-3). Thomas Engert had to get past two very tough players. First he beat Raymund Faron 9-8 and then Earl Strickland 9-7. Mika Immonen also reached his goals of the day by getting past Bruno Muratore 9-4 and then putting our defending champion Karl Boyes out of the event 9-1.

One very strong player making his entrance onto the world stage is Carlo Dalmatin. He beat Yukio Akakariyama 9-7 and then destroyed one of the tournament favorites, Antonio Lining, 9-4. Another former unknown making his debut here is Takhti Zarekari. His strength overcame Thorsten Hohmann 9-8 and then Alok Kumar 9-6. Shane Van Boening is also still in the competition as he got past Nguyen Phuc Long 9-7 and Jalal Yousef 9-2. Our final player left is Dennis Orcullo. He ruined things for Stephan Cohen 9-0 and then barely got past Vincent Facquet 9-8.

At 1 PM on Friday we will watch as Orcullo takes on Shane Van Boening, Zarekari faces Carlo Dalmatin, Chang Jun Lin will go up against David Alcaide and Thomas Engert meets Mika Immonen. The other half of the field will find Nick Van Den Berg against Omaral Shaheeme, Niels Feijen against Oliver Mendinilla, Basher Hussain against Joven Alba and Darren Appleton against Ronnie Alcano.

At the end of the day there will b Read more ...

Frustrated, Appleton began making errors and down 11-7 took a break. He came back and the players split the next two racks to make it 12-8, and then Appleton pulled closer by taking the next game. Morris played an excellent massé shot in the following game to get out of a safety by Appleton and notched that rack, but Appleton took the next two, bringing the score to 13-11 Morris. When Appleton went for a bank shot on the 1 ball, he scratched, and Morris ran out to take the hill. However, even though Appleton got ball in hand in the final rack, he missed the 9 ball, and Morris was able to pocket the last two balls for the win 15-11.

There are still plenty of players remaining in the 9-ball division without a loss, including Johnny Archer, Ralf Souquet, Lee Van Corteza, Mike Dechaine, Scott Frost, John Schmidt, Shane Van Boening, Dennis Orcollo, and Robb Saez.

View Derby City Classic match results (continuous)

View Derby City Classic upcoming match schedules (continuous)

Derby City Image Gallery

Leading the hunt for the all-around champion award is still Alex Pagulayan with 190 points. The 13th annual tournament is hosted by the Horseshoe Casino and Hotel in Elizabeth, IN, and is sponsored by Diamond Billiard Products, Inc., and Iwan Simonis.

Brumback continued to dominate banks at the Derby City Classic by starting off with a win at the Bank Ring Game.

Despite the inclement weather, the numbers are up from last year by over 50 players to vie for the $10,000-added prize purse. Defending banks champion and all-around winner John Brumback won his first match over Danny Hiner in a speedy 12 minutes, while former banks champ Stevie Moore bested Stephen Aylesworth in 14 minutes.

The familiar faces in banks are going strong with first-round wins. Shannon “The Cannon” Daulton bested David Maddux, Truman Hogue won over Joey Koontz, Cliff Joyner defeated David Hunt, Larry Price won his match with Eugene Tatum, and Louis D’Marco won over Mark Thwaites. Johnathan Pinegar upset former banks champion Jason Miller, and Brandon Shuff defeated former one-pocket division winner John “Mr. 400” Schmidt. Last year’s one-pocket winner, Scott “The Freezer” Frost, defeated Larry Howard in the first round.

An all-Filipino match-up between Francisco Bustamante and Warren Kiamco saw the most recent Hall of Fame inductee Bustamante advancing. Lee Van Corteza also made it through the first round undefeated with a victory over Sam Monday, and Ronato Alcano won his match over Evan Lundia. Efren Reyes, a frequent winner at the Derby City Classic, is not in attendance.

Jeanette Lee looks the strongest to contend for the female all-around title, winning over Michael Howard in the first round. First place in the female all-around will net $1,500 with a minimum of eight women participating.

Friday evening saw a six-person, short-rank banks ring game with John Brumback winning the winner-takes-all $9,000 prize and Shannon Daulton as runner-up. Rounding out the field were Jeremy Jones, Shannon Murphy, Mike Hughes, and Louis D’Marco.

Visit InsidePOOL for the latest news in the sport of billiards and pool.

He most recently eliminated Virginia State 9-Ball champion Brandon Shuff 11-4 and then whitewashed Chris Bartram 11-0. Van Boening’s next opponent will be the loser of the Manny Chau / Francisco Bustamante match.

After his surprising first-round defeat by Dechaine, Van Boening has been a man on a mission, hoping to reclaim the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships title he first took in 2007.

Dechaine saw his tournament come to a close in 49th place after his loss to Ramil Gallego of the Philippines. Gallego goes on to face the loser of the Ralf Souquet / Raj Hundal match.

Former world champion Ronnie Alcano remains still alive, having bested Paul Song 11-5. Filipinos Lee Van Corteza and Antonio Lining did not fare so well, though. Corteza was eliminated by Tommy Tokoph 11-8, and Lining was ousted by Daniel Heidrich 11-7. And 2005 champ Alex Pagulayan was eliminated as well after a nail-biting 11-9 match against Jeremy Sossei. 2009 Semifinalist Donny Mills was also sent home after a tight 11-9 loss to Beau Runningen.

The father-and-son duo of Ernesto and Oscar Dominguez are headed home as well after Thursday’s rounds. O. Dominguez was eliminated by Dechaine 11-9, and E. Dominguez ran into a determined Keith Bennett, who won their match 11-8.

Local fans were disappointed to see the elimination of Chris Futrell, a young player but a classy one. Futrell had a close match with Earl Strickland but fell 11-9.
