Thorsten Hohmann World Tournament of 14.1 Champion Again

New Brunswick, New Jersey- Germany once again reigns supreme in straight pool as Thorsten Hohmann dominated the 71st World Tournament of 14.1. USA’s Mike Davis had no answer for Hohmann’s precision game and knowledge of 14.1. Both players played their very first match of the event against each other, and met once again in the very end.

The matches went longer than expected, and lasted to 3:00am before finished. But a large number of die hard fans stayed till the very end including for the closing ceremonies.

“I really say thanks to the fans who stayed here to watch me play to the very end”, said Hohmann in his appreciation for the fans.

“There’s no fans in the world like the ones that come to the World Tournament of 14.1 each year. I recognize 90% of them each year because they love the event and keep coming back”, said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions.

USA’s Mike Davis made a valiant effort. The 9-ball player who picked up the game just a few years ago made it through the round robin with 5 wins and 2 losses. Then he defeated Shaun Wilkie 200-133, Earl Herring 200-79, demolished legendary Mike Sigel 200-79, weathered a tough 200-166 match with Charlie Williams before facing Hohmann.

Thorsten went undefeated in the round robin stages with a perfect 7-0 record and then defeated Dan Mastermaker 200-25, Dennis Hatch 200- 83, Steve Lipsky 200-116, and came back from a huge deficit to win a thrilling match with Filipino Alex Pagulayan 200-172.

In the finals, Thorsten took a commanding lead right away which included a 100+ ball run. Mike was never able to recover from this hit. Fatigue also was a factor on both players as they had already endured tough semi-final matches. They had both pocketed 1500 balls each over the 5 days. Towards the end Hohmann needed less than one rack to win the match but missed 2 times unbelievably to close it out. Davis was in no shape to put any significant numbers up anymore, and Hohmann pocketed the final balls to claim the championship once more. Hohmann won in 2006 as well.

Dr.Fedak presents the prestigious World 14.1 Cup of Champions trophy. Hohmann's name will be etched once again for 2011.

Alex was worn out as he awaited the outcome of the finals, but Hohmann stayed focus throughout his undefeated run of 12 matches including 5 consecutive 100+ ball runs.

“This is definitely one of the most significant accomplishments for me. I’ve won a couple big 9-ball events, but this is major for me to make it to the finals of the World Tournament”, said Davis in his speech to the audience afterwards.

“I felt very good coming into the finals. I ran a hundred balls in each of my single elimination matches (5 in a row). But Mike made a very good effort, so he should be proud of himself. This title means a lot to me”, said Hohmann. With many 9-ball, 10-Ball, and 8-ball titles to his credit, he was asked was 14.1 his favorite game. His reply, “Oh yeahhhh!”

Her trip to the hot seat had included a 4-2 win over Rasmussen earlier in the day. Fatigue showed in both players as the games went into multiple innings. Conquering her fatigue, Rasmussen showed determination by taking the next five games of 9-ball and one game of 8-ball to win the first set 6-1.

This forced the second set, with Rasmussen winning the first game of 9-ball and Billie taking the second. Rasmussen bounced back, winning the next three games before Billie took the final game of 9-ball. The score was now 4-2 Rasmussen, each needing two games to win the 6-4 race. The next game was 8-ball, and after another multiple-inning game, Rasmussen took the game and the hill. Reaching the hill must have given her a burst of energy, for she broke and ran the last game of 8-ball to win the match and the tournament.

Orange Outlasts Great Southern Billiards Field
Great Southern Billiards Tour / Duluth, GA

by Lea Andrews

After a weekend of play that ran over into the early hours of Monday, Tim Orange remained undefeated, taking care of John Maikke twice on the way to his first-place finish on the Great Southern Billiards Tour. The $1,500-added A/B amateur event drew a field of 52 to The Pool Room in Duluth, GA, February 20-21.

AA-ranked Orange rode a strong 11-2 win over B-ranked Bob Lea to face Maikke in the hot seat match. A-ranked Maikke had just sent B-ranked Paul Mullins west 9-5, but he couldn’t mark up the games against Orange, and he moved over to the semifinals 11-4.

On the one-loss side, one of Orange’s earlier victims, AA-ranked Mike Laney, was making a run for a rematch, ousting fellow AA player Billy Young 11-6 to face recent winner Robert South, who’d breezed past B-ranked Felipe Flores 9-2. Another 11-6 victory pitted Laney against Mullins, who landed in fifth after managing to mark up just five games. Meanwhile, B-ranked Richard Andrews was making his way through B-ranked Jeremy Sane 7-2 to meet up with B-ranked Jason Caldwell, who’d won 7-6 over A-ranked Jason Steman. Edging out Caldwell 7-6, Andrews moved on to Lea, but made it no further. Lea put him in fifth 7-3 to advance to the quarterfinals against Laney, whom he held to 8 games in the weighted race to face Maikke in the semifinals. The finals would be a rematch for either man, but Maikke earned the right by a decisive 9-2 score.

The alternate-break, true double-elimination final match didn’t even begin until after two a.m., so fatigue was an issue from the very start. The two traded off games for the first racks, and though Orange managed to open up his lead a little bit, Maikke didn’t let go, reaching his hill of 8 games first after Orange scratched on a tough shot on the 6 ball with the bridge. In what could have been the rack that would push the second set, Maikke got a chance at the table after Orange missed the 3 ball in the side, but Maikke’s shot missed its mark, as well, allowing Orange to finish it off and make it hill-hill 10-8. It was Orange’s turn to break in the final rack, and though he pocketed a ball, he was left without a shot on the 1 ball, and he chose to push. With the cue ball nearly frozen to the foot cushion, Maikke accepted, attempting a long cross-bank, and when it went wide, it left Orange wide open for a run to the winning 5-9 combination.

The first of their two hill-hill battles occurred after Immonen sent 18-year-old Michael Tosado west with a 9-3 win and San Souci sent Danny Cintron to join him 9-2. The fatigue evidenced in the quarterfinals versus Tosado came back to haunt Cintron, as he settled into third place after San Souci won 9-4 and advanced for a second match against Immonen.

San Souci took command early in the finals, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead and then advancing to 5-0 with some key safety play, but Immonen turned the tables and brought the score to 6-5 in his favor. Though San Souci forced the match to a race to 11 by reaching 9, Immonen battled right back to knot things at double-hill, where for the second time in as many matches, San Souci scratched to hand Immonen the cue ball and the win.

Shin Park bested a 32-player field at Master Billiards in Queens, NY, during the March 8 edition of the Tri-State Tour. The double-elimination 9-ball event was the tour’s first open class event in several months, and it brought in plenty of excitement.
Late action on the winners’ side had Jorge Rodriguez slip past Manuel Chau 7-6 to reach the hot seat match, while Park bested Tim Edmonds 7-3 in the same round. The peak of the winners’ side was over in a flash as Park drilled Rodriguez 7-1 to control the bracket.
On the one-loss side Scott Simonetti was making a comeback after shutting out Paul Raval 7-0 then eliminating Edmonds 7-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Chau also began creeping through the remaining rounds, and once he ousted tour regular Mark Vidal 7-5 he was back in gear. Chau knocked out Simonetti 7-3 in the quarterfinals then eliminated Rodriguez 7-6 in the semifinals, getting revenge from his earlier defeat.
In the last match of the day Chau faced the waiting Park in the finals, where both players showed their fatigue. Each player opened with a three-game streak for an early 3-all tie, but then Park blasted it open with five straight racks for an 8-3 lead. Chau got back into the race, bringing the score to 8-7, but a dry break left Park to run out for the 9-7 win.
Results:
1st Shin Park
2nd Manuel Chau
3rd Jorge Rodriguez
4th Scott Simonetti
5th Tim Edmonds
