2011 BCAPL Singles and Scotch Doubles Champions

Tuesday, May 17th at the 35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas was all about the semis and finals in both the singles and scotch doubles divisions. The best of the best in each division focused to keep their stroke mechanics and nerves in place as hundreds of spectators watched who would take the top spots in each event.

Runaway Matches

From the 381 ladies, Jennifer Kraber of Austin, Texas (league 621) went undefeated to become the 2011 BCAPL Women’s Open Champion. Her lopsided finals match against Josie Leroy of Newberg, Oregon (league 154 & 432) ended in a score of 4-0. Over the three days of singles play, Kraber only gave up eight games in her ten matches. Kraber, a regular top finisher on the OB Cues regional tour, also had a 7th place finish in the masters scotch doubles with long-time partner James Davis, Sr. of Manor, Texas.

In the BCAPL Men’s Masters finals, Harvey Shognosh of Forrest, Ontario, Canada (league 601) also went undefeated through the 45 player field of top notch players to best Gustavo Correa of Houston, Texas (league 191 & 1073) with a final score of 7-4. Both players delivered strong performances in a near flawless finals match for spectators.

Tuesday, May 17th at the 35th BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas was all about the semis and finals in both the singles and scotch doubles divisions.

Scotch Doubles Madness

It was an all Arizona BCAPL Open Scotch Doubles finale. Of the 338 entries, the Mesa team of Jesse Renteria (league 293 & 526) and Bernie Store (league 293) went undefeated to beat the team of Chris Paradowski and Lois Schmitt from Tucson (both league 24). It was Store and Renteria’s first tournament playing together. “I’ve known this guy for 12 years and never played a game of scotch together,” said Store.

Of the 71 BCAPL Masters Scotch Doubles teams, John Maikke and Dana Aft from Atlanta, Georgia (both league 875) came through the b-side to defeat the Wisconsin team of Robert Hovick (league 348) and Kelly Birmingham (league 807) in a two-set finals score of 5-1, 4-3. It was run-out scotch doubles pool at its finest. Every game in both sets was finished in one inning or less.

Double-Dippers

In the 112 player BCAPL Women’s Senior division, Shawn Modelo from Antioch, California (league 322) came through to redeem herself in the finals. After losing the driver seat match to Lois Schmitt of Tucson, Arizona, Modelo was came back with a vengeance. She took the first set handily, 4-0. Schmitt would put up a bigger fight in the second set. When the match was hill-hill, Modelo hooked herself on the 8-ball and nearly kicked it in. Schmitt missed her opening shot and left a shot and the win for Modelo.

Meanwhile one table over, 18-year-old Danny Olson from Brookings, South Dakota (league 953) was grinding it out. After losing his first match of the new BCAPL Men’s Advanced division, he came through the 100-player field to double-dip local Las Vegas favorite Chris C. Akey (league 769) 6-2, 6-2. Olson won the men’s players member division in 2010.

Of the 283 entries in the popular BCAPL Men’s Senior division, Bill Skinner of Aurora, Colorado (league 671) double rolled through the finals match against Bill McCoy (league 187) from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 5-1, 5-1. After losing 5-3 to McCoy earlier in the tournament, Skinner was on a mission and the mission was accomplished.

Hill-Hill Mania

Veteran 8-ball player Jolene Herum from River Falls, Wisconsin (league 234 & 996) cruised undefeated through the 39-player BCAPL Women’s Advanced division. Meanwhile Tacoma, Washington’s Cindy Sliva (league 154) lost her first match and came back through 10 rounds including a tough hill-hill match with Junior National Champion Liz Lovely to meet Herum in the finals. Sliva was ahead 4-3 but was unable to capitalize. At hill-hill, Herum broke and ran to close out the set 5-4.

In the BCAPL Women’s Master finals, it was a case of different division déjà vu. Of the 27 entries, Amanda Lampert from Frisco, Texas (league 1034) lost her first match 7-5 to Arizona’s Susan Williams (league 293 & 1094), only to fight her way to the finals against Canadian Jana Montour (league 497). At hill-hill, Montour broke and ran to take the set and the title. Final score was 7-6.

Robert Green from Bellaire, Texas (league 151 & 406) went undefeated to best Bill Dunsmore of Lutz, Florida in the finals of the men’s super seniors (age 65+). At hill-hill, Dunsmore ran down to his key ball and Read more ...

Shane Van Boening is leading the pack at the Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open, which has wound down to its final 6 players from the full 64-player field they began with two days ago.

Van Boening’s closest match was in the first round against Darin Brewer, whom he defeated 9-6. Since then he has been demolishing opponents, only giving up eight games in the last four rounds. After his 9-1 trouncing of James Roberts Saturday evening, he went on to knock Donny Mills into the one-loss side 9-2 and then sent Charlie Williams to follow 9-3.

Van Boening is leading the pack at the Seminole Pro Tour / Gem City Open, which has wound down to its final 6 players from the full 64-player field they began with two days ago.

In the hot seat Van Boening will face Mike Dechaine. Dechaine’s road has more speedbumps than has Van Boening’s—two of his last three matches have gone double-hill. His last match of the evening Saturday saw him best Rod Rentz 9-8, and then in Sunday’s first round he had to face Hall of Famer Johnny Archer, whom he defeated 9-6. A hill-hill nail-biter over Adam Smith put Dechaine in the hot seat match against Van Boening.

Smith is still alive, though, and will face off against Corey Deuel in the next round. Deuel recently eliminated Mills 9-5 and James Baraks 9-6. In the other one-loss side match, Williams will play Wilkie, whom narrowly escaped a hill-hill match with Archer in the previous round.

With the action still going strong on day two of the 34th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, which is being held October 18-24 at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, VA, many big names remain undefeated after two rounds of play, while others have become early victims. All 216 players remain in the field, though elimination rounds begin Tuesday morning.

Still on the winners’ side is past champion Ralf Souquet, who notched up an 11-1 win over EJ Glode and an 11-4 win over Thomas Giddens. After shutting out Pat DiBuono, Steve Moore rolled over Stefano Ariavakis 11-1. Spain’s David Alcaide was almost as stingy with the 9 balls in his first two matches—he rode an 11-1 win over Scott Hershman to an 11-3 victory over Kaloyan Rusanov.

Defending champion Mika Immonen, who held Jerry Fitchett to six games in round one, will have to defend his crown from the left side of the bracket after running into a determined Chris Bartram in round two. Bartram got out ahead 2-0, 3-1, and 7-3, but Immonen managed to tie it up at eight games apiece. Talent and luck were both on Bartram’s side in the final racks, and he took racks seventeen and eighteen with a 2-9 combination and a 1-9 combination, respectively, and though Immonen claimed rack nineteen after Bartram left a safety on the 2 ball open, he couldn’t close rack twenty, which turned into a safety battle after Immonen missed position on the 6 ball. It was Bartram who came out on top, making a difficult shot on the 6 to earn the right to face Alcaide 11-9. Another fallen hero is 2004 U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen, who fell 11-9 to Abdullah Alyousef after being up 4-1. Runner-up that year, Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann also suffered a second-round loss to Jason Klatt 11-9. After falling 11-6 to Robb Saez, 2006 U.S. Open champion John Schmidt will face Don Steele on Wednesday, while Oliver Ortman , who fell 11-9 to Keith Bennett, will face Thorsten Hohmann, who managed just nine games himself against Jason Klatt.

Second round winners’ matches still to come are Jonathan “Hennessee” Pinegar versus Charlie Bryant, Tony Chohan versus Jose Parica, Darren Appleton versus Zaid Thweib, and Shane Van Boening versus Marvin Davis.

Eric “Easy E” Charlton took no prisoners on his way to the finals of the Great Southern Billiard Tour’s amateur event, held July 11-12 in Roanoke, VA. The $1,000-added A-B event drew 36 hopefuls to Guys and Dolls, but only Charlton remained undefeated to the end.

Following a strong 7-3 victory over A-ranked Danny Mastermaker, B-ranked Charlton moved on to the hot seat match, where he met Bobby Chamberlain, an A-ranked player on the cusp of being AA. Chamberlain, who’d just knocked B-ranked Tony Williams west 9-4, managed only six games against Charlton, and when Charlton dropped the final 9, Chamberlain’s work was cut out for him.

On the one-loss side, B-ranked Brad Shearer was dominating his matches, finishing off B-players Phil Muller and Stanley Smallwood 7-2 and 7-1, respectively, before coming upon Danny Mastermaker. Though the end score was tied 7-7, it was a win for Shearer in the handicapped format, and it earned him the right to meet Williams in the quarterfinals. Williams had come out on top of their last match-up—the finals of the June 13-14 event—but he managed just three games this time, and Shearer went on to meet Chamberlain, who was more than ready for him.

With a 9-4 victory over Shearer, Chamberlain went on to his rematch with Charlton. Needing both sets of the true double-elimination finals to claim first, Chamberlain started off strong, reaching his hill of eight games while Charlton, at four games, still needed three to win. In the alternate-break format, Chamberlain broke open the thirteenth rack but missed the 1 ball, leaving Charlton out. Charlton took the next with a 1-9 kick combination to put the match at hill-hill. Chamberlain, left without a shot on the 1 ball following his break in the final rack, chose to kick safe, but Charlton nailed a jump/bank shot to get out of it, though it left him without a makeable shot on the 2 ball. Playing safe, he left Chamberlain no choice but to kick, and when the balls stopped rolling, a tournament-winning 2-9 combination was waiting for Charlton.

WPBA Satellite Tour / Bristol, TN

Karen “The Irish Invader” Corr, who was undefeated after two days of play at Borderline Billiards in Bristol, TN, came back from a late loss Sunday to capture first in the WPBA Satellite Tour’s inaugural event. The $10,000-added event, held July 10-12, drew 64 talented ladies, pros and amateurs alike, 12 of whom returned for Sunday’s play.

Corr, who had given up only eight games upon reaching the final four on the winners’ side, allowed Monica Webb only five games, moving on to the hot seat match against Gerda “G-Force” Hofstatter, who on her way had knocked aside Line Kjorsvik, Ewa Laurance, and Julie Kelly. Corr turned out to be the last in the string of pros whom Hofstatter would defeat, and Corr joined the one-loss side with a score of 9-7.

On the left side of the bracket, Kelly Fisher, who on Saturday had gotten up 6-1 on Kelly before falling 9-7, was ousted by Allison Fisher 7-4. A. Fisher, though, was next pitted against BCA Hall of Famer Laurance, who was coming off of a hill-hill victory over Val Finnie. On a roll, Laurance held Fisher to five games, but she couldn’t get past Webb, who was trying to push her way to the finals. Meeting Webb in the one-loss quarterfinals was Kelly, who’d gotten past Kim Shaw 7-3. Kelly managed only two games, though, and it was time for Webb to try to exact her revenge on Corr. Taking the first three racks in the race to 7, Webb seemed Hofstatter’s likely opponent in the finals, but when nothing fell on the break for Webb in the fourth rack, Corr began her comeback. In a seven-game streak that included excellent cue-ball control, great safety play, and three break and runs, Corr moved on to the finals.

Having won seven straight games to get there, it seemed that Corr had adopted the same simple strategy in the single race-to-11 finals: Don’t let an opponent make a 9 ball. And for the first nine racks, she didn’t. In the tenth rack, though, Hofstatter cleared the table with ball in hand on the 1 ball to put herself on the board 9-1. But she’d hit the string for the last time, as Corr, coming out on top of the safety battles that followed in the next two racks, emerged the first-ever winner of a WPBA Satellite Tour event.

Winters kept up her streak against Mago, putting her in fourth with a score of 4-2 before meeting up with Caukin, whom Monk had bested in the match for the hot seat 6-3.

With the score at 3-1 in the one-loss semifinal match, Winters was on the hill, while Caukin, who was racing to 6, still needed five games. Caukin won four games in a row, putting the match at hill-hill, and was set to break and run the last 8-ball game, even pocketing the winning 8, but when she scratched, the game and the set went to Winters.

Having just come off a tough match, Winters faced another extremely tough competitor. She marked up game one, but it proved to be her only win, as Monk dominated the rest of the match, taking eight in a row to claim first.

At a table immediately next to theirs, Daulton got a slow start against Marc Vidal, falling behind 3-0. He caught up right away, though, winning five in a row to go up 5-3. It was a lead he never relinquished, though Vidal kept poking away at it. Daulton won four of the final eight games and finished it at 9-7.

Pinegar advanced at the expense of Tony Chohan. They, too, battled back and forth a game at a time until the score reached 5-5. Pinegar then made his move and advanced to 7-5. Chohan won another rack, but Pinegar won two of them and finished it at 9-6.

At one point in the match between Runningen and Scott Lewis, Runningen had what appeared to be an overwhelming lead of 5-0. But Lewis traded racks through the next four games to make it 7-2 and then embarked on an impressive run that brought him within two at 7-5. Runningen reached the hill at that point, and Lewis answered to make it 8-6. A successful three-rail kick on the 1 and a 3-10 combo saw Runningen join the winners’-side final four.

Defending champion Shane Van Boening was eliminated early in the 11 p.m. round by Larry “The Truth” Nevel. Nevel reached the hill but scratched on the 6 ball to give Van Boening another chance at it. “The South Dakota Kid” collected the next two racks to make it 10-9, but he had to jack up on the 7 ball to miss the scratch in the side pocket. Instead, he scratched off the 9 in the corner, and Nevel took the 11-9 victory. Another elimination match featured Northeastern player Brandon Shuff versus Tyler Edey of Canada. The players traded racks through the first eight games, and then Edey went up to 7-4. Shuff took a quick break and came back to string three racks together.
Adam “GQ” Smith went head to head with Warren Kiamco in another one-loss side match. A dispute about Kiamco’s “soft break” marred the beginning, but the score was soon tied at 4-all. Then Smith missed a combo shot, leaving Kiamco an out, which he took advantage of to win the next five racks. Smith collected one more game before Kiamco ran out the set 11-5.

On the Accu-Stats table, Raj Hundal and Donnie Mills matched up. Mills took a commanding 9-4 lead, never leaving Hundal a shot. Mills broke and ran out to reach the hill and then played safe on the 1 ball after his next break. Hundal pocketed the 1 and 2 balls but missed a 3-9 combination and scratched. Mills had little trouble clearing the table to win 11-4.

Tony Chohan went up against former champion Ralf Souquet in the winners’ side, with Souquet taking a strong 6-2 lead. However, Chohan fought back to bring the score to 10-9 Souquet. Chohan pocketed a 2-9 combo to make it hill-hill. He almost scratched on the 1 ball in the final game but pulled it off with a 11-10 win.

Friday’s matches on the winners’ side will feature Filipinos Ronnie Alcano versus Francisco Bustamante, Thorsten Hohmann versus Rodney Morris, Daryl Peach versus Johnny Archer, and Mika Immonen versus Jose Parica. In the one-loss side, Corey Deuel will play Larry Nevel, Donnie Mills plays Tyler Edey, Tony Chohan plays Warren Kiamco, and Ralf Souquet plays Oscar Dominguez.

The $3,000-added event, sponsored in part by Heineken, drew 28 players to Prime Time Sports Bar and Grill in South Amboy. Corr and Ranola met first in the hot seat match, which Corr had reached by defeating Tiffany Nelson 7-2. Ranola had sent My Han Lac west with a 7-5 victory. Corr prevailed as the last woman standing and awaited Ranola’s eventual return. On the one-loss side, it was Julie Kelly, having just defeated Romana Dokovic, who was waiting for there for Nelson.
