Efren Reyes continues to prove that his game is still timeless. Reyes won his 3rd round match yesterday at the 11th Predator International Championships defeating the top pro from Spain. Reyes continues his streak at this event from last year as its reigning champion. Yesterday’s victory made it 10 match wins in a row at the Predator Championship since 2010. The win propelled him into the final 16 stage of the event where he will be seeded #3 and play against the 14th seed.

The 11th Annual Predator International Championship is the premiere event of Predator Cues and produced by Dragon Promotions taking place this week September 15 – 18, 2011 at Robinson’s Galleria Mall in Manila, Philippines. The event is co-sponsored by Asia Brewery Incorporated, Yalin Tables, Andy Cloth, Pool & Billiard Magazine, Colt 45 Strong Beer, Summit Natural Drinking Water, Motolite, Aramith Balls, Robinson’s Galleria, Magic 89.9 Radio, Philippines Star Newspaper, Crowne Plaza Ortigas, and TV network partners ABS-CBN and ESPN Star Sports. Over 30 countries are estimated to be represented at this year’s event including Germany, India, Sweden, China, England, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, Finland, Hong Kong, Norway, Mexico, Canada, Curacao, Venezuela, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Austria, Hungary, Netherlands, Italy, Malta, and the USA. World class pros from across the globe will fill the field. Daily coverage and full info on www.predator10ball.com

Reyes is still reliable for his country.

Contact Dragon Promotions at predatorchampionships@gmail.com for more info on event

Reyes was seeded #1 in this event and had a bye in round one. Then he defeated Jason Shaw of England in the second round. Last night was a tester as he faced David Alcaide of Spain, who recently finished 2nd at The US Open in Las Vegas. Alcaide also finished 3rd at The Predator Sweet 16 last year here in Manila. The match with Alcaide was close with Reyes staying ahead one game until 6-5. Reyes then missed a long bank shot on the 10-Ball and Alcaide tited it at 6-6. Alcaide missed a jump shot the next game and lost momentum with Reyes winning the match 9-6.

“I was sick at the last tournament with stomach pains, and this event I started with some pains in my lower back and buttock areas. But now it’s gone and I feel like I’m playing better,” said Reyes. Last year at this event Reyes said after the 3rd round win he felt like he could win the event after gaining some comfort and confidence.

Other top Filipino bets will be Ronnie Alcano who won 9-0 yesterday against Carlo Biado.Last year’s finalist Roberto Gomez also cruised to the top 16, and perhaps is vying for a second crack at Reyes who defeated him at this same event last year 10-9.

The Filipino players will have their hands full still as tope Europeans Mika Immonen, Chris Melling, and Thorsten Hohmann are still in the hunt. The Europeans have dominated the events in the Philippines the past few years with exception of Reyes sole win last year at The Predator Championships.

No change at the top

THERE IS NO change among the top six players on top of the 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup European Rankings, after the conclusion of the World 9 Ball Championship in Qatar last week – and that now puts some considerable distance between the probables and the possibles.

No.1 ranked Chris Melling, increased his lead at the head of the table with a last 32 finish, while Darren Appleton and Ralf Souquet strengthened their positions by reaching the last 16, thus heaping pressure on Niels Feijen and Nick Van Den Berg who failed to get in the points in Doha.

The biggest mover was England’s Mark Gray, a Mosconi Cup winner in Malta in 2008, who had a magnificent run to the semi-finals. He moves from 26th to 9th but trails the automatic third placed spot by 32 points.

It seems increasingly likely that the top three automatic invites will be taken from Melling, Van den berg, Feijen, Souquet and Appleton unless one of the chasing pack can step up to the plate.

There are now just four events left on the European Mosconi Cup ranking, with players gathering in Austria this week for the next stop on the Euro Tour.

Austrian Open 7-9 July

German Open 25-27 August

Hungarian Open 29 September to 1 October

US Open 9 Ball Championship 17-22 October

The Ranking (Top 15)

2011 US Mosconi Cup Rankings Latest

Shane Back in Business After Riviera Glory

Shane Van Boening, an ever-present in the US team at the past four Mosconi Cups, played his way back into contention for this year’s side with victory at the US Open 10-Ball Championship at the Riviera, Las Vegas.

‘The South Dakota Kid’ took down Spain’s David Alcaide 11-6 in the championship match to cap a great week. Van Boening’s win sees him climb to No.2 in the rankings from a lowly 10th spot.

Van Boening had recently returned from a lengthy sojourn in Asia which included a number of highly successful match ups in Manila.

Van Boening had recently returned from a lengthy sojourn in Asia which included a number of highly successful match ups in Manila. He played seven sets against the likes of Ronnie Alcano, Francisco Bustamante and Jeff De L una and was undefeated.

All that high quality practice stood him in good stead for Las Vegas, and with four events to go in the qualifying series, Van Boening will be favourite to take one of the top three automatic positions.

56.5 points clear at the top, though, is Mike ‘The Fireball’ Dechaine whose 7th place finish at the Riv ensured that he maintained his No.1 position. Corey Deuel, with seven Mosconi Cup appearances to his name, is zeroing in on Mo.8 as he finished third to jump two places into the coveted third spot, 55 points ahead of 2009 MVP Dennis Hatch.

Fallers include Shawn Putnam, Hatch and Earl Strickland who now finds himself in sixth spot. Johnny Archer creeps into the top ten for the first time.

The US Mosconi Cup Ranking consists of 10 events throughout the United States, culminating in the US Open in October. Points will be allocated as per the BCA Points List and each event will be weighted depending on total purse, size of field and number of top-ranked players competing.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event will be allocated points and players will be allowed to drop their worst finish of the ten event series. At the conclusion, after the 2011 US Open, the top three players will automatically gain entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

The remaining two players will be Matchroom Sport wildcard picks although the ranking will play a part in this.

American Mosconi Cup contenders take a break for nearl y three months and reconvene in Connecticut from 11 to 14 August for Turning Stone Summer.

The Ranking

Van Boening Snares U.S. Open 10-Ball Title

Shane Van Boening defeated Spain’s David Alcaide by a score of 11-6 to snare the U.S. Open 10-Ball title at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Van Boening picked up $15,000 for his performance while Alcaide earned $8,500. The finals of the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship was between two highly decorated professionals from both sides of the Atlantic. After 6 days the field of 96 player, representing 10 countries, whittled down to U.S. favorite Shane Van Boening and Spain’s David Alcaide.

Van Boening defeated Spain's David Alcaide by a score of 11-6 to snare the U.S. Open 10-Ball title at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Starting the day four players returned for day six of the event. The first match featured Spain’s David Alcaide versus relatively unknown player, Dennis Haar from Terre Haute, Indiana. This was Haar’s first professional 10-ball tournament and his best finish in any big event. Haar cleared a path to the final four by way of defeating top players James Baraks, Mitch Ellerman, Mike Dechaine, and Jonathan Pinegar. Unfortunately, his efforts fell short against Alcaide who jumped ahead at 6-5. Haar jumped and hung a 1-ball for Alcaide to get on the hill. At 7-5, Haar missed a 4-7 combination that would cost him the match.

In the winner side finals match between Van Boening and Corey Deuel, both players appeared to be “trading errors,” said TAR commentators. They exchanged racks until the score was 4-4 when Deuel hooked himself on the 7-ball. Deuel would win one more game to make it 5-4 before Van Boening took the next four, breaking and running on hill to win 8-5. Deuel and Alcaide would meet next for the semi-finals match, race to 9, win by two games.

In this match, Alcaide jumped to a quick 4-1 lead and appeared to be playing fast and loose. The gentlemen exchanged some defensive maneuvers over the next few racks until the score was tied 4-4. In an unbelievable turn of events, Deuel missed the 1-ball with ball in hand allowing Alcaide to take that game and the next one. Both players continued to struggle, exchanging racks until Alcaide took the set 9-6.

The final match was a race to 11, win by two games. Van Boening entered the finals undefeated. 2011 has been another banner year for Van Boening as he also recently ran over the competition at the Derby City Classic taking first in the One Pocket, second in 9-Ball and the Master of the Table honors in addition to taking 9th in the World 8-Ball Championship. Alcaide, long considered the top professional player in Spain, recently finished 3rd in the World 8-Ball Championship, 9th in the Beijing Open Men’s Division and was the first player from Spain to represent Team Europe in the Mosconi Cup. Alcaide came through the one loss side winning 7 matches in a row after a 3rd round loss to Scott Frost.

The nerves ran high into the finals between Van Boening and Alcaide. Alcaide took a quick 5-1 lead when a dry break would cost him two games. At 5-3, Van Boening returned the favor with a dry break but Alcaide was unable to capitalize. He missed a 6 ball that allowed Van Boening to close the gap and take the lead. In the middle section of the match, the spectators were treated to several safety battle games. However Van Boening prevailed and won seven games in a row to pull ahead 8-5 when Alcaide finally seized his opportunity with a tricky 6-10 combo billiard from the 3-ball. That would be the final game he would win. Van Boening turned it into high gear and kicked in the 4-ball at 10-6 followed by a safety on the 5-ball which led to ball in hand and the run out.

The 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship was sponsored by Mueller Recreational Products, McDermott Cues, Diamond Billiard Products, Simonis, Aramith, the Magic Rack, Billiards Digest and BreakRAK with direction by CSI Director of Rules and Referees Bill Stock with Ken Shuman from California and John Leyman from New York. The Action Report (TAR) live streamed the entire 6 days of the event with additional expert assistance by the team from Run Out Media.

Dechaine is Story of Day 4 at the 3rd U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship

Going into Friday morning at the 3rd Annual U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship the story on everyone’s lips was the outstanding performance by currently #1 U.S. ranked player “Fireball” Mike Dechaine. As the field gets smaller, the matches get tighter. Although moved to the one loss side earlier in the week by Kenichi Uchigaki, Dechaine has fired through the one loss side with a vengeance. After eliminating Earl Strickland during the 6 pm Thursday round, Dechaine then defeated “The Scorpion” Johnny Archer 8-0 in the 11 pm round, running seven consecutive racks to close out the set. Friday morning Dechaine then went on to defeat Jeremy Sossei 8-4 and Raj Hundal 8-5.

Arizona’s Mitch Ellerman is also sitting pretty after squeaking out a hill-hill win against Mike Davis. Ellerman broke and ran on the hill to advance. On the feature TAR table, “The Magician” Efren Reyes was struggling against Jonathan Pinegar. He found himself down 7-3. He claimed one more game to make it 7-4 and appeared to be coming back until he made the fatal error of bumping the 8 ball into a tricky position. He attempted to bank it in the side but left the shot and match for Pinegar. Reyes will now face Spain’s David Alcaide for a chance to stay alive.

“The Lion” Alex Pagulayan took an early exit settling for 13th- 16th place after losing to Darren Appleton. This was after Pagulayan defeated California’s Corey Harper after arriving late to his match and receiving a one game penalty, then being down 5-0 and 7-3. Appleton meets up with Germany’s Ralf Souquet next. Souquet had to forfeit his winner-side match against Corey Deuel due to a minor car accident earlier in the day.

On the right side of the bracket, Shane Van Boening and Scott Frost will face off in the hot seat match. Frost has played consistent all week knocking to the one-loss side: Darren Appleton (8-4), Tony Robles (8-5), David Alcaide (8-4) and Charlie Williams (8-5). Van Boening also had a near flawless record on his way to the hot seat match tossing Donny Mills (8-4), Danny Harriman (8-3), CJ Wiley (8-3), Brandon Shuff (8-0) and Dennis Haar (8-5).

Mika Immonen had a heartbreaking day today. Trailing 7-0 to Tomoo Takano he put on a fantastic display of cueing power to win 7 of the next 8 racks and trail 8-7. He was on his way to tying the match when he missed a straight-in five ball to surrender the table for the last time and lose 9-7 to end his campaign in the event. At this point there are no easy matches. But Yu Lun Chang dominated his match over Imran Ibrahim 9-1 nonetheless. Most of the rest of the matches were closer. Johnny Archer got past Haitao Liu 9-6 and Chris Melling defeated Marcus Chamat by the same score. Manuel Pereira had a nail-biter against Antonio Gabica that found him winning 9-8 while Yukio Akakariyama destroyed Ibrahim Bin Amir 9-2.

He led Alok Kumar 6-3 only to lose 9-7. His countryman, Oliver Ortmann, looked very comfortable as he knocked out Naoyuki Oi 9-6. Tony Drago wasted no time defeating David Alcaide 9-6 and Ricky Yang suffocated Jeff De Luna 9-3. Huidji See is quickly becoming one of the guys to watch in this tournament as he played near-perfect pool to beat Youseff Jalal 9-3 and Pin-Yi Ko eased past James Delahunty 9-4.
The third round found Dennis Orcullo defeating Mario Morra 9-4 and Karl Boyes besting Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz 9-3. But many of the matches were much closer. Ronni Alcano had little trouble with Demosthenes Pulpul as he won that one 9-2 and Lo Lii Wen won over Jonas Magpantay 9-6.

The first match to reach the finish line in the final round of the day was Lee Van Corteza winning 9-5 over Lu Hui Chan. Li He Wen finished the day well with a 9-3 win over Luong Chi Dung and Jundel Mazon won over Jericho Banares 9-5. Jianbo Fu continues to look strong as he beat Po-Cheng Kuo 9-7 and Shun Yong Park won over Ivica Putnik 9-3. Nick Van Den Berg kept things well under control with his 9-4 thrashing of Muhammad Zulfikri while Marvin Tapia and Chieh Liu Chen kept it close throughout in a match that rarely saw more than a game between them. This one went to double-hill with Chen prevailing to take the nerve-wracking win 9-8. Finally, Hao Xiang Han ended our day with his 9-4 victory over Stephan Cohen

Ever-strong Sascha-Andrej Tege beat Artem Koshovoj 9-5 and Darren Appleton slid by Ping Chun Ko 9-8 while Jason Klatt required two and a half hours to overcome Che Wei Fu 9-5. Thomas Engert was another player who had to wonder what happened today. To finish the second round of the day Jin-Hu Dang beat Carlo Dalmatin 9-6.

The third round found Dennis Orcullo defeating Mario Morra 9-4 and Karl Boyes besting Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz 9-3. But many of the matches were much closer. Jiaqing Wu outlasted Ming WIng 9-7 and Shane Van Boening got past Vicenancio Tanio by the same score. Daryl Peach narrowly got by Omaral Shaheeme 9-8. Carlo Biado was neck and neck with Roberto Gomez until he caught a gear late in the match to win 9-6.

Alcaide dominated the match as Appleton only came to the table sparingly. Alcaide won 9-2.

It then became the Orcullo break ad run show as repeated this performance ever and over until the score stood at 5-0.

Then it was time for the Championship match between Dennis Orcullo of the Philippines and Niels Feijen of the Netherlands. Orcullo won the lag and broke and ran the first rack. It then became the Orcullo break ad run show as repeated this performance ever and over until the score stood at 5-0. Orcullo had to play in local qualifiers to get into the tournament and he was making the most of the opportunity. When he broke the rack in game 6 he scratched in the side pocket and Feijen had his first opportunity.

View the brackets

Feijen polished off that rack to put his first mark on the board at 5-1 down. He then suffered a dry break but left a tough run of balls for Orcullo. Orcullo had to bank the three ball cross corner to get his run begun and then had a very tough lay of the land to navigate. He took his time surveying each shot and did a simply marvelous job of getting through the rack with one tough position after another. But he left himself long on the 8 ball and it rattled in the jaws, returning Feijen to the table.

Feijen had a big problem with the 14 ball. Everything else had a pocket but the 14 was blocked from the corner by the 8 ball. He would need to slide into a narrow window between the two to play the 14 up-table, attempt a bank, or try to move the 14 with another shot. Or he could play a safe and try to get ball in hand. He chose the safe, locking Orcullo behind the 13 ball way up-table. Orcullo called the 8 in the corner and measured his kick shot. He missed the 8 ball and scratched, again awarding ball in hand to Feijen. Feijen positioned the cue between the 8 and the 12 ball which he had moved next to the 14 on his safety, made the shot and finished off the table to bring our score to 5-2.

Feijen made two balls on the next snap and had an easy layout. He very quickly made it 5-3. He was running throughout he next rack with ease when he got what appeared to be a skid on the 4 ball and it stayed up between the corner jaws. Orcullo was back at the table. He cleared up and the score became 6-3 in our race to ten games. Orcullo made a great spread of the balls on the next break and finished that rack easily to lead 7-3.

The outlook began to truly dim for Feijen when Orcullo made three balls on the next break and faced an open table of well-spread balls. It was soon 8-3 Orcullo. But Orcullo scratched in the side pocket on the break to bring some light to Feijen’s chances. But he missed a long shot to the corner early on and Orcullo finished off the balls to claim his spot on the hill.

Orcullo now stood one rack away from his first World title. He made two balls on the break but the table was not an easy one to finish off. But he made it look easy and sank the final 8 ball to a celebration of fans in the arena. FInal score 10-3.

Thanks again must out to the organizers and sponsors such as Etisalat, Dubai SPorts, the Chantoot Group, Fujairah INternational Airport anal the others who made this event such a great success.

On Thursday Raj Hundal of India had both at the World Pool Billiards Association (WPA) World 8-Ball Championship. He began great, destroying Konstantin Stepanov of Russia 9-0 in a perfect match where he broke and ran the set. Stepanov never had a single chance at the table as Hundal won 9-0 to progress. But then the tables turned on him and Joven Alba of the Philippines eliminated him from the tournament 9-7.

Hundal destroyed Stepanov of Russia 9-0 in a perfect match where he broke and ran the set.

This was a day of joy and heartbreak for many. In this single-elimination stage any loss means the end of the road. US Open 9-Ball Champion Darren Appleton survived the day by overcoming Huidje See 9-3. Others in his section of the chart to make it into Friday included Bashar Hussain and Ronnie Alcano. Alcano had to defeat Oliver Ortmann 9-6 while Hussain ended the run of Salah Al Remway 9-5. The next section found legendary player Ralf Souquet escaping Joven Bustamante 9-7only to then fall victim to Nick Van Den Berg 9-1. Omaral Shaheene won over Rudolfo Luat 9-5 and then gave similar treatment to Manuel Gama 9-4 to keep his hopes alive.

View the brackets

Niels Feijen is having a good week. He is still in it via his wins over Do Hoang Quan 9-7 and Rodney Morris 9-2. And Oliver Medinilla also continues his quest as he rolled over Vilmos Foldes 9-5. Chang Jun Lin is still here. He defeated Roberto Gomez 9-6 while David Alcaide put down both Naoyuki Oi (9-3)and Lee Van Corteza (9-3). Thomas Engert had to get past two very tough players. He beat Yukio Akakariyama 9-7 and then destroyed one of the tournament favorites, Antonio Lining, 9-4. Another former unknown making his debut here is Takhti Zarekari. His strength overcame Thorsten Hohmann 9-8 and then Alok Kumar 9-6. Shane Van Boening is also still in the competition as he got past Nguyen Phuc Long 9-7 and Jalal Yousef 9-2.
