Pagulayan Picks off Derby City Classic Banks Title
Derby City Classic / Elizabeth, IN

by InsidePOOL Staff

The Derby City Classic staff decided to go ahead with the banks event Monday evening and finish it out, so the final seven players returned to battle it out for the $10,000-added prize fund and 9-ball banks title. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan came through it all to win top honors over fellow countryman Ronato Alcano.

Alcano and Pagulayan were the only two of the seven without a loss, and they played each other, with Pagulayan winning 3-2. Defending champion John Brumback eliminated Francisco Bustamante 3-2, Justin Hall ousted Shannon Daulton, and Jeremy Jones had the bye.

In the next round Alcano eliminated Jones, Pagulayan dispatched Hall, and Brumback had the bye. The redraw saw Brumback and Pagulayan on the Accu-Stats table. Brumback had a loss earlier from Sylver Ochoa, but Pagulayan had none. Brumback won the lag, banked three balls and missed a jacked-up long bank, but it wasn’t long before he was back at the table and had won 5-2. The second game was a long safety battle, with Brumback winning by a close 5-4. The third game went speedily, as Brumback broke and banked five and out, winning the match 3-0 as Pagulayan bowed low in homage.

The next redraw set Alcano and Brumback against each other in the semifinals while Pagulayan waited in the wings. Brumback dropped five balls on the break and made one ball before spotting the balls and turning the table over to Alcano, who was faced with a layout more like a position exercise than a banks game. Neither player could get a run going, and the lengthy rack ended in Alcano’s favor 5-3. The second game took even longer, with fatigue etched into the players’ miens, and it also went to Alcano 5-2. Brumback came to life a bit in the next, running three and then two banks to win 5-2, making it 2-1. Alcano notched three balls before a series of misses by both players ensued. Finally Alcano pocketed his last two to win the match 3-1.

View Derby City Classic match results (continuous)

View Derby City Classic upcoming match schedules (continuous)

In the all-Filipino final match, Pagulayan opened up by banking five and out in the first game, exciting the onlookers who had stayed up to watch. It was a defensive game all the way in the following, though, more similar to a one-pocket game than banks. The abnormally quiet Pagulayan eked out a 5-3 win. He missed after his next break shot, and Alcano banked five and out, making it 2-1 Pagulayan. Alcano pocketed the first ball in the next rack, but Pagulayan chipped away at the balls, finally getting the ball count to 4-1 in his favor. Alcano kept playing safe, and Pagulayan was crestfallen when he would miss. “I thought my picture was going to be up there already!” he exclaimed, indicating the enormous pictures of past winners hanging from the ceiling. Alcano was fading quickly—it was 3:30 a.m.—and left a simple cross-side bank for Pagulayan, who studied it briefly and then whipped it in. “Finally!” he cried.

Pagulayan and many other players will report at 10 a.m. for their next one-pocket match. But somehow “The Scorpion” dug deep and turned the tables on his opponent, nicking away at Orcollo’s lead. It wasn’t until each player had 9 games that the score was finally tied, and then suddenly Archer surged ahead to take the next two racks and the match to go into the third round still undefeated.

Down 6-1 in the race to 11, it looked fairly bleak for Archer in his second-round winners’ side match against Dennis Orcollo.

Stevie Moore also had a comeback against Bahram Lotfy in the second round, as he found himself with a two-rack deficit at 4-2 Lotfy. But he, too, remained calm and continued to chip away at Lotfy’s lead. He won four racks in a row to bring the score to 6-4 in his favor. At that point, though, Lotfy rallied and took a two-rack lead at 8-6. It was a close match after that, but finally Moore emerged the winner 11-9.

Defending champion Mika Immonen bested Japan’s Kenichi Uchigaki in the second round 11-5 and will next meet “Mad Max” Eberle, who just defeated Danny Olson 11-2. The 2004 champ, Gabe Owen, sent local hope Chris Futrell to the one-loss side 11-4, while Southern threat B.J. Ussery made quick work of Shaun “Get Some” Wilkie, besting him 11-4.

Other former champions still alive are John “Mr. 403” Schmidt, who survived his first-round match against Gregg McAndrews 11-4, and Corey Deuel, who won his first round against Tom Czaplicki 11-1.

View U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships tournament bracket 1 (updated continuously)

View U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships tournament bracket 2 (updated continuously)

Live streaming provided by Accu-Stats.

The legendary Efren Reyes won his first match Monday, delivering Nick Tafoya west 11-3. Former world champ Ronnie Alcano also is undefeated, having bested Justin Hall 11-6. Warren Kiamco trounced Richard Burns 11-2, Ramil Gallego won over Belinda Beardon-Calhoun 11-7, and Lee Van Corteza also triumphed over Alexander Fitzgerald 11-2.

Predator World Tournament Down to the Four Players

Thorsten Hohmann of Germany withstood a late night comeback from USA’s Charlie Williams to win 200 to 195 in a nail-biter match. Hohmann is two matches away from a third World Championship, which would set a record for Europeans. The Predator World Tournament of 14.1 is produced by Dragon Promotions. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world’s oldest tournament.

Hohmann trailed Williams early on 60 to 22, but then came back with a 130 ball run to take the lead.

The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event started play on October 6, 2010 and ends on October 11th. The greatest straight pool players from around the world have arrived on USA’s east coast again to New Jersey, and vying in this prestigious event to win the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion. The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.

Hohmann trailed Williams early on 60 to 22, but then came back with a 130 ball run to take the lead. Williams then came back with a 50 ball run, and then another 70 ball run to take back the lead before an easy miss left him needing 17 balls to win the match. The score was 183 in favor of Williams with Hohmann at 149. Hohmann then crusied his way to the final rack needing only 5 balls, but he hit the break shot too hard and left himself a long shot on the 12ball. He missed and gave Williams one more chance. Williams ran a difficult table and the score stood 196 to 196. Williams had a tough break shot, he made the ball but scratched. Hohmann had no shot so played an intentional foul, Williams made a great thin cut for a re-safe. Hohmann studied the table, and opted for a possible carom shot on the 6ball. He fired it in and got rewarded with an easy 3 balls to get to the semi-finals tomorrow.

“I blew it. I had chances to put him away at the end and I let him go”, said Williams after the match. “But I can’t complain. I never play straight pool and I just show up to a 14.1 event and start playing it. So it’s more than I expected.” Williams finishes 5th in the World Tournament in back to back years.

Johnny Archer was the only other USA player still in. He faced the great Oliver Ortmann. Both players missed many opportunities and the pressure seemed to weight heavy on both men. Archer had run four 100+ runs in the event thus far including a 174 high for the event. In the end, Ortmann missed a little less than Archer and won the match 200 to 151.

Mika Immonen continues his red hot run as he ran 100+ in both his matches today. Mika looks like the man to beat as he is in a very high straight pool gear. He won 200 to 58 over Li Lo Wen and 200 to 36 over Dave Daya.

Huidji See, former silver medalist, ended France’s Stephan Cohen’s reign as the defending champion. See will be entering his 2nd semi-finals at the World Tournament with his 200-110 victory.

Tomorrow Oliver Ortmann of Germany will face See of Netherlands and a classic match between Thorsten Hohmann vs Mika Immonen. Last night Mika had an opportunity for payback, and the outcome was poetic sweet revenge for the Finnish champion. Mika was able to take out Sigel in magnificent style Saturday night in a packed arena for the live streaming of The Predator World Tournament of 14.1 produced by Dragon Promotions. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world’s oldest tournament.

Last night Mika had an opportunity for payback, and the outcome was poetic sweet revenge for the Finnish champion.

The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.

Sigel ran 100&out against Immonen in a 100 to 11 route of the World #1 Immonen during the round robin stage. This put Mika in extreme danger of not qualifying. During this loss, Sigel made a questionable hit on the cueball. Mika called it a foul, Sigel disagreed. He continued his run and never gave Mika another chance at the table. Immonen refused to shake his hand afterwards.

In the aftermath review of the tape, Tournament Director John Leyman said it was a clear and obvious foul. At this point, it was too late.

Mika gets over his last match with Mike and shakes hands before the match

The drama of the match ran to the next two days and when the draw for the next stage of the event was done, fans were salivating at the prospect of a Sigel/Immonen re-match.

“I definitely thought about a re-match with Mike the past two days after he beat me. Everytime I thought of that match, I got motivated in my last two matches to qualify. You can say I was ultra-motivated,” said Immonen. Mika needed to win his last two to have a chance. He won by landslides in both giving his opponents hardly any chances.

In the showdown of Sigel vs Immonen Part 2, Immonen looked like a man on a mission. Sigel looked dismayed as Immonen ran rack after rack. The Iceman, as Mika is known, looked sure and steady every shot. In the end, to the roar of the audience, Immonen gave a fist pump and shout with his 150 & out perfect match over Sigel. 150-0 final score.

“This match will definitely be a crowd pleaser for the fans who get the DVD. We are going to put it in a two episode DVD,” said Pat Fleming, owner of Accu-Stats.

Does Mika believe in poetic justice?

“Absolutely. Actually, those were the exact words ringing in my head during my three matches leading upto Sigel again. Poetic justice. It exists. I proved it.”, said Immonen. This was Immonen’s first 150 & out run on film, and even more special to do in a real match at The World Championship.

Immonen advances to the final 16 once again. Sigel also bounced back to win over Shaun Wilkie and qualified for the final stage. A possible Immonen vs Sigel Part 3 may be in the works before the World Tournament is over…

Live streaming of the event at accu-stats.com

After the smoke has cleared, it’s the “Main Man” from Atlanta, Georgia Johnny Archer who has earned the #1 seed into the next stage of the event. At the same time, the last woman standing Jasmin Ouschan won a convincing match against defending champion Stephan Cohen to win her group. Archer and Jasmin join 6 other players who went undefeated, but no one could top Archer’s performance of keeping his opponents to the smallest margin of points. This week 48 players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world’s oldest tournament.

The field has been cut in half at the Predator World Tournament of 14.1 as the round robin stage of the event is finished.

The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event started play on October 6,2010 and ends on October 11th.

Archer ran 100 and out in three of his five matches, completely blitzing his opponents. Dave Daya (USA), Jasmin Ouschan(AUT), Mike Sigel(USA), Ralph Eckert(GER), Lo Li Wen(TAI), Danny Barouty(USA), and Oliver Ortmann(GER) also went undefeated with perfect 5-0 records in their groups. These players all earned a bye in the next stage of the event and will be further rewarded to face a low seeded player afterward.

The big match of the evening was Jasmin Ouschan versus defending World 14.1 Champion Stephan Cohen of France. Ouschan played a steady game but gave chances to Cohen in their TV match for Accu-Stats. But Cohen could not take advantage of his opportunities and did not play the solid pool that won him the title last year. To the applause of the crowd ,clearly pulling for the young lady, Ouschan finished off Cohen 100-61.

The round robin stage of the event is over, and today begins the double elimination stage of the event. The races will now goto 150 points. After today, the final 16 players will be set into a single elimination race to 200 points knockout.

Live streaming of the event at accu-stats.com

The 2010 Predator World Tournament is proudly sponsored by straight pool aficionados Dr.Louis Pannullo of NYC, Bill Austin of UT, Harold Siegel of NYC, Stu Mattana of NYC, and Badi Nazhat of Curacao. This week 48 players worldwide are vying for the Predator World Tournament title in straight pool. This is the 70th edition of the event, making it the world’s oldest tournament.

Archer ran a perfect 100 ball run to win 100-0 and 100-13 in back to back matches at the Predator World Tournament of 14.1.

The World Tournament is being played on beautiful Brunswick Gold Crown tables and using Simonis Cloth. The event is co-sponsored by Amsterdam Billiard Club, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, Ultimate10ball.com, and Accu-Stats.

Archer defeated Peter Burrows in his first match running out from the lag. And then again his next match against Jonni Fulcher. Last year Archer took the bronze in a 3rd place tie at The World Tournament.

In the highly anticipated Accu-Stats TV match, Mike Sigel faced red hot Mika Immonen. Living legend versus rising legend. But it would be a one sided war as Sigel ran rack after rack keeping Immonen in his chair almost the whole match.

But during the run, Sigel was elevated on a jacked up shot over a ball, while the cueball and object ball was very close and he shot and made the ball, with the cueball going forward several inches. But the shot was questionable on whether it was a double hit push or legal. Mika mentioned aloud that it could be a foul, Sigel kept on shooting. There was no referee on the shot, and Mika did not ask for a replay on the video. Sigel continued his run and eventually ran the set with Mika never reaching the table again.

“I believe that was a foul”, Diliberto said during the commentary. The shot was replayed a few times for the filming, but no true conclusion was formed.

Immonen was clearly distraught over the incident. But nothing could be done after.

Sigel has moved on undefeated and Immonen now has a 2 loss and 1 win record and is facing danger in not qualifying for the cut. He will need two wins now and hope that it doesn;t go into a ball count tiebreaker.

Live streaming of the event at www.accu-stats.com

The 2010 Predator World Tournament is proudly sponsored by straight pool aficionados Dr.Louis Pannullo of NYC, Bill Austin of UT, Harold Siegel of NYC, Stu Mattana of NYC, and Badi Nazhat of Curacao.

Hall of Famer and living legend Mike Sigel is aiming for his 4th World Championship in 14.1 in this year’s 70th edition of the World Tournament. Sigel, while chatting constantly throughout the match, managed to win a decisive 100 to 5 score over Jim Gottier of NYC, who finished 9th last year. Sigel is one of the many great players in the 48 invitational field at Breaker Billiards which is hosting this year’s event.

Sigel is aiming for his 4th World Championship in 14.1 in this year's 70th edition of the World Tournament.

The event started play October 6, 2010 and will end on October 11th. Gottier got one good open chance but was not able to capitalize. Sigel made some tremendous shots to the delight of the fans who can remember the famous “Captain Hook” from his stellar days on tour decades ago.

“I only won this three times? I’m pretty sure I won it six times, but back then they called it the US Open a few years instead of the World Championship. Oh well”, Sigel was saying after the match.

Sigel will be facing a mouth watering feature against World #1 Mika Immonen of Finland at 8pm tonight. Immonen will be fresh off his Challenge of Champions win two days ago.

Other highlights included Danny Barouty scoring one for the USA as he ran 99 & out against Netherland’s Huidji See, who silver medaled in 2007. Barouty won 100-0. German favorite Thorsten Hohmann defeated Gerda Hofstatter of Austria 100-32.

As the last bank was pocketed Sunday night at the Horseshoe Casino, the players looked to the Monday morning draw with anticipation.

The Banks event saw some heavy matches as the Sunday action sent dozens more of the top professional bank pool aficionados packing.

The highlight of the day saw two legendary past champions square off on the Accu-Stats live streaming table. As Efren Reyes and Shannon Daulton entered the arena, the crowd gathered to watch the what they knew would be a match to talk about afterward. The match saw Reyes jump out to a 1-0 lead but in what seemed to e only minutes, Daulton fought back and surged ahead of Reyes to a 2-1 lead.

Reyes got a second chance in his match with Daulton after Daulton scratched on the match ball.

It seemed to be over with Reyes looking lethargic and nonchalant in his shot approach. Daulton took a 4-1 ball lead and 2-1 game lead to the table to pocket what seemed to be the match bank. After successfully pocketing the ball, Daulton started to approach Reyes for a congratulatory handshake but was stopped dead in his tracks and watched in disbelief as the cue ball traveled all the way around the table to slowly use its last ounce of energy to scratch.

That might have been just bad news, the the real salt and lemon for the wound came as Daulton scratched again during his next shot. This gave Reyes the shot that he needed to come to life, play perfectly and win the next two games to deliver Daulton his first loss.
