Europe 6– 4 USA

TEAM USA recovered from a first day hammering at the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup as they put themselves right back into contention, winning three matches to Europe’s two at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Stellar performances from the Americans saw them level the match at 4-4, before the Europeans derailed their momentum to take the final two games and move into the fourth day with a two point lead.

There was plenty of Mosconi Cup drama as debutant Mike Dechaine overcame Ralf Souquet 6-1 and Rodney Morris had an outburst that he will be happy to forget in a hurry. However, coming into the day three points down, Team USA will be happy to have reduced the deficit.

The opening match of day two was a must-win situation for the Americans and win it they did as Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening edged past the Dutch duo of Feijen and Van den Berg. With the racking changed from the opening day – a regular rack was used instead of the Magic Rack – the balls were spreading nicely and both pairs took advantage with succession of break and runs.

With the USA having won the lag, they reached the hill first and had a great chance to win 6-4 but Van Boening left Archer in the lurch with just the 8 and 9 balls left on the table and the Dutchmen eventually took the rack to make it hill hill.

Archer dropped four balls into the pockets from his break shot and himself and Van Boening went on to claim a nerve calming win.

“We’re not doing anything different. Our execution yesterday meant we over ran a few shots and we’ve just tightened it up. We had chances to win matches yesterday,” said Archer.

There was more USA joy in the second match as Mike Dechaine – a heavy underdog – put in a perfect performance to overturn Ralf Souquet by 6-1 and reduce the European lead to just one point.

The 24 year-old Dechaine looked a bundle of nerves and adrenaline prior to the match but he made it all work in his favour as he ran through his racks with precision and cashed in on a couple of errors from Souquet.

“This is definitely one of the best moments of my life. I’m having a great time and everyone has a positive attitude, even though we were 4-1 down after the first day,” said a delighted Dechaine.

“We had a couple of unfortunate events yesterday but today we’ve put up a good line-up and it’s going to be a great day.”

There was plenty of drama and controversy in the next match as Team USA drew level, winning their third consecutive match of the day as Rodney Morris and Shawn Putnam beat the English pair of Melling and Appleton.

6-5 was the score line as the US stole it at the last when Appleton left Melling a tough pink 4 ball and he overcut it to give the table and subsequently the match to the Americans.

The real drama came at the start of the sixth rack when Morris’s temper boiled over and he used some regrettable language. Some of the rowdier elements got to him and he told Darren Appleton, in no uncertain terms, to tell them to be quiet. It then escalated as Morris then audibly offered the Englishman to step outside.

Things calmed down as the Americans went on to take the match and afterwards Morris was highly embarrassed by his outburst as well as apologetic.

In the fourth match of the day, Nick Van Den Berg put in a superb performance to beat Johnny Archer 6-1 and rest Read more ...

Second Title in Four Years for Li and Fu

China 10-5 Philippines

CHINA, represented by Fu Jianbo and Li Hewen, won their second PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool crown as they dismantled the Philippines by a 10-5 scoreline and silenced a huge home crowd at the Robinsons Place Mall in Manila.

It was the second time that the deadly Chinese duo have now lifted this prestigious crown – they beat Finland in a hill-hill thriller in Rotterdam in 2007 – and they never let up from the opening rack as the home team felt the pressure and never really got going.

Over the week of the tournament, the sheer quality of their play throughout shone through and in Fu Jianbo they have one of the most exciting players in the world. Li Hewen though is as reliable as any player and to win the World Cup twice in four years cements their world class credentials.

“We are very happy with the victory but we just got the luck we needed from the Philippines team,” said a reflective Fu Jianbo.

It soon became 7-1 as the dynamic Chinese pair ran out from the break.

“They made a few mistakes and we took advantage of that. The Philippines team literally gave us the match because they made a lot more mistakes than we did. It was very pressured though, because it was a big pro-Filipino crowd.

“It was like the home court advantage so to win here, we’ve got to be very, very happy winning the tournament,” he added.

For the Philippines side of Dennis Orcollo and Roberto Gomez, it was an anticlimax after their heroic 9-8 defeat of Taiwan in the semis and maybe they were mentally drained by their efforts.

Either way, China took the opening rack to settle their nerves but the Philippines levelled it when their opponents made a mess of the 8 and 9 balls. Every Filipino pot and Chinese miss was greeted with deafening cheers.

It’s hard to under-estimate the pressure the players were under and it showed in a shocking third rack as the four struggled to pot a ball between them as the crowd started to get agitated.

Every single player missed shots they would normally have made. Gomez’s mistake, when he missed the 9-ball into the side pocket, was the most crucial though and Fu Jianbo downed the 9-ball for a 2-1 lead.

The next rack isn’t much better and it went to China to increase their lead and they took the next to go to 4-1 which silenced the huge home crowd.

Orcollo made a huge error in the next when his attempt to snooker the Chinese fell woefully short. Fu Jianbo, normally the most reliable of potters, missed an easy 9 ball but Gomez could only play a less than watertight safety and Li Hewen played a magnificent cut shot to give his side a 5-1 lead.

The Philippines desperately needed a break to stop the runaway train and they got it when Li, scratched pushing out. They tried for the three foul rule but Fu went off three rails for the great escape. Gomez left a poor snooker which Li potted with a kick shot and it was soon 6-1.

It soon became 7-1 as the dynamic Chinese pair ran out from the break. The Philippines finally got a shot at the 1 ball in the ninth as Li hashed up a 1/4 combo. Orcollo though, missed a tough long cut on the 5 ball and China took another rack. China reached the hill as a weak shot from Orcollo left an open table.

Philippines finally won another rack to reduce arrears to 9-2 and they then broke and ran the next two to get the crowd going. It was all too much of a mountain and although they got to five racks, it was the mighty Fu Jianbo who rolled home the final 9 ball of the tournament for Chinese glory.

As well as the title, magnificent trophy and gold medals, the duo also took the US $60,000 top prize.

“It was a great performance from us and playing with Fu gives us so much confidence,” said Li Hewen.

“To win the World Cup again is an incredible experience and fantastic for Chinese pool and we can’t wait to come back next year and try to defend our title,” he added.

With 32 teams representing 31 countries – home nation Philippines has two sides in the competition – the World Cup of Pool sees the gathering of some of the most decorated stars of the pool firmament. The event is taking place at Robinsons Place, in Ermita, Manila.

With a total purse of $250,000, the winning pair split $60,000 between them while first round losers are guaranteed $1,500 each. All the action will be carried live on Solar Sports in The Philippines and other broadcasters across the region.

The Chinese team dominated the final.

Semi Finals Scores

China 9-7 Germany

Philippines B 9-8 Taiwan

Quarter Final Scores

China 9-3 Indonesia

Germany 9-7 France

Philippines B 9-1 Finland

Taiwan 9-5 Poland

Second Round Scores

Taiwan 8-2 Japan

Indonesia 8-6 Philippines A

Germany 8 -1 Russia

France 8-6 England

China 8-5 Italy

Finland 8-1 Holland

Poland 8-7 USA

Philippines B 8-4 Spain

First Round Scores

Russia 8–4 Canada

Indonesia 8-7 India

China 8–2 Belgium

Italy 8-6 Korea

Germany 8–4 Hong Kong

Philippines A 8-3 Thailand

England 8–7 Qatar

France 8-5 Australia

Japan 8–7 Slovenia

Poland 8-6 Malta

Taiwan 8–2 Malaysia

Philippines B 8-4 Croatia

Holland 8–3 Austria

Finland 8-2 Singapore

USA 8-7 Sweden

Spain 8-5 Vietnam

Helene Caukin won her first Lucasi Hybrid All-American Tour stop May 1, besting Nicolle Rasmussen in the finals. Hosted by the Art of Billiards in Gainesville, FL, the $250-added event attracted 11 of Florida’s top women players.

The single-elimination event quickly wound down to the final four competitors, with Caukin facing Shanelle Lorraine, while Rasmussen went up against Jessica Barnes. In the first semifinal match, Caukin rattled a couple of 9 balls, and Lorraine took an early lead. But Caukin countered and brought the score to 5-all after Lorraine jawed the 9. From there, it was all Caukin as she took over the table and eventually won the match 7-5.

In the other semifinals, Rasmussen quickly took a 2-0 lead, but Barnes fired back and tied the match. Rasmussen pulled away taking the lead 4-2, but Barnes managed to pull within one game. When it looked that she would tie the score, Barnes missed the 8 ball, and Rasmussen went up 5-3. Again Barnes found her rhythm and looked to be out when an unexpected miss on the 6 ball gave Rasmussen another game. Now on the hill, Rasmussen ran out, closing out the match 7-3.

<img src="http://www.insidepoolmag.com/wp-content/uploads/acs-logo1.jpg" alt="Helene Caukin won her first Lucasi Hybrid All-American Tour stop May 1, besting Nicolle Rasmussen in the finals. But Caukin’s momentum continued as she took back control and jumped to a 5-1 lead. Rasmussen steadily chipped away at Caukin’s lead until the score was 6-4. Caukin broke and watched the cue ball drop in the side pocket. With ball in hand, Rasmussen made the 1 and then the 2-9 combo to put the score at 6-5. Rasmussen broke, hoping to tie the match. But a dry break was her last chance, as a determined Caukin decided it had been long enough and ran the rack to take her first Lucasi Tour win.

1st Helene Caukin $370
2nd Nicolle Rasmussen $250
3th Jessica Barnes $100
Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Fuquay-Varina, NC

by Lea Andrews

B.J. Ussery, who last won a Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour event in January, made a strong move through the one-loss side at the April 17-18 event to regain his spot on top. Ussery’s victory came at the expense of the strong field that gathered at On The Snap Billiards in Fuquay-Varina, NC, for the $1,000-added event.

Ussery suffered an early 7-3 loss to Keith Bennett, who went on to reach the winners’ side final four. There Bennett faced Johnny Griffin, who dealt him a 7-5 blow to arrive in the hot seat match against Arnold Hamlet, who’d sent Peaches Fuller west 7-3. Hamlet went west himself, though, after Griffin earned the spot in the finals 7-5.

On the left side of the bracket, Michael “Bulldawg” Fuller blew through Chris Rhoades 7-1 and Delton Howard 7-1 to face Bennett, whom he ousted 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Ussery got past Michael Dearing 7-4 and Chris Turner 7-1 to meet up with P. Fuller, who missed a faceoff with his son in the quarterfinals by two games, landing in fifth 7-5. Ussery, who’d fallen to “Bulldawg” 11-4 in the finals of an event in March, had exacted 7-3 revenge early in this event, and he got more vengeance in the quarterfinals, planting Fuller in fourth 7-2. One more obstacle stood in his way, but after taking care of Hamlet 7-3, he found himself in the finals once again.

In the single race-to-11 match, Griffin and Ussery traded games until Ussery led 4-3. Three games in a row put him well ahead at 7-3, but Griffin fought back, notching five games straight to take the lead for the first time at 8-7. But the rest of the 9 balls were Ussery’s, and he earned his victory 11-8.

<img class="size-full wp-image-7428" title="bj-ussery-carolina" src="http://www.insidepoolmag.com/wp-content/uploads/bj-ussery-carolina.jpg" alt="B.J.
Friday’s early bird event drew 13 players, and Keith Bennett walked away with the top prize of $140 after his decisive 7-1 victory in the finals over Chris Vollmar, whom he’d also taken care of in the hot seat match 5-2. Vollmar received $80, and Craig Wolfe received $40 for third. In Sunday’s second chance event, Michael Yingling pocketed $100 for his 7-6 victory over Vollmar, who took home $60. Pam Bartholomew topped the ladies’ division, while Jordan Douglas topped the juniors’. Vollmar earned another $50 when he won the break contest, but the break and run purse went unclaimed once again, pushing the pot to $87 per ball for the next event. The final winner of the weekend was Lynn Aycock, who found himself the owner of a $600 Jacoby cue when his ticket was drawn in the raffle.

Results:
1st B.J. Ussery $1,000
2nd Johnny Griffin $425
3rd Arnold Hamlet $200
4th Michael Fuller $75

U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships / Chesapeake, VA

by Lea Andrews

With the action still going strong on day two of the 34th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, which is being held October 18-24 at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, VA, many big names remain undefeated after two rounds of play, while others have become early victims. All 216 players remain in the field, though elimination rounds begin Tuesday morning.

Still on the winners’ side is past champion Ralf Souquet, who notched up an 11-1 win over EJ Glode and an 11-4 win over Thomas Giddens. After shutting out Pat DiBuono, Steve Moore rolled over Stefano Ariavakis 11-1. Spain’s David Alcaide was almost as stingy with the 9 balls in his first two matches—he rode an 11-1 win over Scott Hershman to an 11-3 victory over Kaloyan Rusanov.

Defending champion Mika Immonen, who held Jerry Fitchett to six games in round one, will have to defend his crown from the left side of the bracket after running into a determined Chris Bartram in round two. Bartram got out ahead 2-0, 3-1, and 7-3, but Immonen managed to tie it up at eight games apiece. Talent and luck were both on Bartram’s side in the final racks, and he took racks seventeen and eighteen with a 2-9 combination and a 1-9 combination, respectively, and though Immonen claimed rack nineteen after Bartram left a safety on the 2 ball open, he couldn’t close rack twenty, which turned into a safety battle after Immonen missed position on the 6 ball. It was Bartram who came out on top, making a difficult shot on the 6 to earn the right to face Alcaide 11-9. Another fallen hero is 2004 U.S. Open champion Gabe Owen, who fell 11-9 to Abdullah Alyousef after being up 4-1. Runner-up that year, Thorsten “The Hitman” Hohmann also suffered a second-round loss to Jason Klatt 11-9. After falling 11-6 to Robb Saez, 2006 U.S. Open champion John Schmidt will face Don Steele on Wednesday, while Oliver Ortman , who fell 11-9 to Keith Bennett, will face Thorsten Hohmann, who managed just nine games himself against Jason Klatt.

Second round winners’ matches still to come are Jonathan “Hennessee” Pinegar versus Charlie Bryant, Tony Chohan versus Jose Parica, Darren Appleton versus Zaid Thweib, and Shane Van Boening versus Marvin Davis.

Team Croatia, made up of Ivica Putnik and Philipp Stojanovic, completed a superb comeback to dump Spain out of the 2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool in Rotterdam

The Spanish duo of experienced David Alcaide and Carlos Cabello, were two balls away from victory, leading 7-2 with just the 8 and 9 balls remaining.

Alcaide’s miss allowed Croatia to save the match and they went on to win the next five to seal a glorious win, although not without a struggle.

Reigning European Straight Pool Champion Ivica Putnik lead from the front as he and Stojanovic overcame nerves and cashed in on some lax Spanish play to take the win.

Spain took an error strewn opener as both sides failed to settle, but Croatia took the second to level things before the Spanish completed a decent run out to regain the lead.

Croatia got back to the table following an illegal break from Spain, but Stojanovic scratched into the middle pocket. Alcaide lost position slightly as he double kissed the black 8 but Cabello retrieved the situation with a long pot, gaining perfect position on the 9 ball which they potted for 3-1.

The Spaniards ran out of position with just two balls left on the table and Alcaide scratched as he tried to play a difficult snooker. With ball in hand, the Croatians took the rack to move within one of their opponents.

A poor positional shot on the 2 ball saw Putnik hooked and he failed to make contact with the 3 ball. Another ball in hand situation saw Spain run out for 4-2.

Spain then took the next three to reach the hill at 7-2. Spain though made their first mistake in some time when Alcaide, who had looked uncomfortable throughout, missed the blue 2 following a perfect break.

Stojanovic, though missed a horror 3 ball but Alcaide once again missed, this time on the 8 ball with victory in his grasp and Croatia stole the rack to stay in the match at 3-7.

Buoyed by their good fortune, Croatia won the next but looked like they had blown their chance to go 5-7 when Stojanovic missed the 7 ball.

Cabello though failed to make a very tight cut on the same ball and the Croatians gave themselves a chance to save the match.

Amazingly, Croatia took the next to send the match hill-hill and a perfect break from Stojanovic saw two balls drop and a perfect layout.

They nervously worked their way through the table and when Putnik drove home a long 9 ball for the match, their delight was plain to see.

They now meet the might of the Americans for a place in the last eight.
Russia 8 – 4 Malaysia

16 year-old wonderkid Ruslan Chinakhov was the star of the show as Russia looked good value winners dumping Malaysia out of competition by an 8-4 scoreline.

Paired with former European No.1 and 2007 Mosconi Cup winner Konstantin Stepanov, the Russians had a little too much for the Malaysian pairing of Ibrahim bin Amir and newcomer Lee Poh Soon.

Malaysia took the opening rack but a fired-up Lee then sent the cue ball to the floor on his break shot. With ball in hand Russia lost position but Lee missed a simple 9 ball to gift the rack to Russia.

Stepanov and Chinakhov cleared the table from the break in the next to go 2-1. Stepanov’s attempt at a snooker in the fourth was foiled when he accidentally nudged the 3 ball in and his partner was forced to escape.

A lucky bank on the 2 ball when playing safe from Bin Amir set his side up for the run out to take the score to 2-2.

Russia were snookered in the next and Stepanov took the jump shot on. He missed it but the cue ball, travelling down table, nudged the 9 ball into the centre pocket for 3-2.

There was more luck for Stepanov in the next as the 9 ball was kicked into the same centre pocket on his break shot to open up a 4-2 lead.

Cueing confidently, the two Russians won the next and then worked their way through the table as they ran out for a 6-2 lead.

Chinakhov was called for a foul shot on the break as referee Nigel Rees deemed the cue ball to be ahead of the headstring. A 1/9 was on for the Malaysians and they took it to stop the rot at 3-6.

Lee made two balls on the next but the requisite third ball failed to travel past the headstring as Malaysia relinquished their visit.

The two teams traded visits before a fine cut on the brown 7 from Stepanov put Russia in the driving seat and they cleared to reach the hill at 7-3.

A bit too much juice on the break from Stepanov saw the cue ball drop and the Malaysians ran out to reduce the deficit and give themselves a life line.

A dry break though allowed Russia a tactical push out. The Malaysians gave the table back to them and Chinakhov produced a stunning jump shot to put Russia in charge and they cleared to take the match as comfortable 8-4 winners.
Japan 8 – 5 Australia

JAPAN, represented by Naoyuki Oi and Satoshi Kawabata, the same pairing that reached the semi-finals in the 2007 event, came back from 4-1 and 5-2 down to oust Australia in their first round match.

There was some controversy in the second rack as the Australians, leading 1-0, broke with Lawler. One ball went into a pocket with another going over the head string. However, due to the breaking rules which require three balls to be either pocketed or go over the head string, the table should have been passed over to Japan.

But neither side, nor the referee, noticed the error as Australia continued with their next shot and it was too late for play to be brought back when the mistake was realised.

Australia claimed that rack for 2-0 before each side won one of the next two as the scoreline now showed 3-1 to Australia. They took the next before Japan won the sixth for 4-2 but had no luck with the break in the next as Oi’s powerful shot saw no balls fall into any of the pockets and Australia made it 5-2.

Wims then produced an illegal break as he downed one ball with only one other crossing the headstring. It gave Japan more time at the table and Oi and Kawabata, who had not let the earlier error get to them, did the rest for 5-3.

A fine 2-4 combination from Kawabata followed by an excellent thin cut pot on the green six from Oi helped to bring Japan to within one rack at 5-4.

Another powerful break from Oi came up dry but a misjudged safety from Wims gave the Japanese a shot on the 1-ball and Kawabata and Oi ran out from there for 5-5.

Japan were in total control throughout the 11th rack and after trailing 4-1 now lead for the first time in the match by 6-5 and were only two away from victory.

Australia had a chance in the next but Lawler potted the green six and then could only watch as the cue ball drifted into the side pocket. With ball-in-hand, Japan sunk the 7, 8 and 9 balls to move to the hill.

Japan produced a good break when it was needed and with two balls down and a shot at the 1-ball the match was there for the taking. They took it to win 8-5 and advance into the last 16.
Croatia 8 – 7 Spain

Russia 8 – 4 Malaysia

Japan 8 – 5 Australia

Rick Beams and Chris Duncan hosted their first annual Kentucky State Championships in 9-ball and 8-ball at their Paradise Billiards Café in Bardstown, KY. This April 12-13 event was restricted to Kentucky residents—but no pros allowed. Played on 8-foot Gold Crowns, the tournament was well-received with 60 total entries, with Duke Laha and Donnie Sinkhorn winning their respective divisions.
The 9-ball division saw a match-up of pre-tournament favorites in the winners’ semifinal. “New York Dave” Grau dropped a 7-0 bomb on David Rice to advance, while the other semi saw Duke Laha move on 7-3 over Gregg Pagulayan (the world-renowned Alex’s uncle). That defeat inspired Gregg as he then eliminated Rice and then knocked out 13-year-old straight-shooting future pro Landon Shuffett by a 7-4 count.
The winners’-side final pitted Laha against Grau, and helped by two 9 balls on the break, Laha took the hot seat at 7-4 while Grau went left to play Pagulayan. Gregg kept his underdog bid going with another win. In the finals, he needed to defeat Laha twice to win it all. A little-known fact in Kentucky is that Laha won consecutive European Armed Forces straight pool championships in 1982 and ’83. In a well-played final by both men, Laha garnered another title by the score of 7-4.
After a late night Saturday, the 28 8-ballers went at it in races to 4 Sunday. Bardstown’s own Alan Foster made a strong bid and finished in fifth. Mike Brown was a force throughout before settling for fourth. Laha was making a bid for both titles and made it to the winners’-side finals before being sent left by Sinkhorn. David Rice then knocked Laha out in third and would need to best Sinkhorn twice to win it.
When Sinkhorn entered, he had not hit a single ball in three weeks. His plan was to play his way into stroke. After failing to cash in the 9-ball division, he arrived Sunday and announced his readiness, saying, “I ain’t played bad two days in a row since 1983.” And at hill-hill in the first set, Sinkhorn backed up his prediction by executing a very tricky run-out to win his own State title.

Nevel Takes Great Southern Billiard Tour Finale By Michael Basha Larry “The Truth” Nevel took his ninth win today on the Great Southern Billiard Tour in the form of a 15-3 drubbing of second-place finisher Sparky Ferrell in the tour’s finale. Tour director Shannon Daulton announced Nevel as the Player of the Year just before the finals for his eight previous wins on the Great Southern Billiard Tour, including a daunting three-pack of tournament wins at the end of last year. It was obvious why Daulton made his decision as Nevel ran out from the break 11 times out of 15, including two 9 balls on the snap en route to an uncontested victory. Ferrell took the first game but remained at one, while Nevel built a substantial lead at seven games, and Ferrell only managed to get two more games before Nevel’s lead grew to unassailable proportions.
