Chad Vilmont dominated the 26-player field that attended the Lucasi Hybrid Cues All-American Tour’s December 17 stop, besting Anthony Garcia in the finals for the title. The $500-added 8-ball tournament was hosted by Sharky’s Billiards in Davenport, IA.

Despite the handicapping, the heavyweights dominated on this day. On the A-side Vilmont, rated a 7 on a regional handicap system used, and Garcia, ranked a 6, won their semifinal matches over Josh Johnson 7-4 and Ronnie Martin 6-5, respectively. Vilmont then took the hot seat by dispatching Garcia 7-4.

On the B-side Ronnie Martin and Rich Bideaux were relegated to fifth place at the hands of Jesse Bowman 8-4 and Josh Johnson 7-5, respectively. Johnson then eliminated Bowman at fourth place by a 7-4 margin. The B-side finals went in favor of Garcia, as he turned back Johnson 6-5. The final went to the hill, but the undefeated Vilmont prevailed in the first set to claim the title by a 6-5 margin.

USA and Canada Share Honors at the 2011 Lucasi Hybrid Cues ACS Nationals in Las Vegas

Moving the 2011 ACS National Championships to the newly-renovated Tropicana Las Vegas, May 7-14 – at the urging of the ACS board of directors – proved a shrewd move, as the service-oriented property bent over backwards with its friendliness and attention to detail to host the American CueSports Alliance most major Championships! When the heat of competition in twenty-four divisions of play in 8-ball and 9-ball had cooled off, players and teams from both USA and Canada merited similar overall successes.

In the Men’s 9-Ball Singles Houston’s undefeated Nick Hood took advantage of his handicap rating to dispatch Bill Mason (Virginia Beach, VA) in the one-set finals, 7-5. The Women’s 9-Ball Singles crown was hoisted by Jessica Frideres (Ft. Dodge, IA), who spotted opponent Leslee Davis (Lutz, FL) one game and fell behind 0-3 before recovering to take the division by a 7-4 margin! In 8-ball singles, Ike Runnels (Kankakee, IL) comfortably dispatched the always dangerous Glenn Atwell (Gig Harbor, WA) in the first set of the finals, 7-3, to claim the Men’s Advanced 8-Ball Singles top spot; while Canadian Sherry Warren (St. John’s, NL) and Kit Dennis (Ridgefield, WA) – more than 3,000 miles apart in residences – dueled to a final’s 7-6 climax in favor of Warren for the Women’s Advanced 8-Ball Singles laurels.

In the Men’s 9-Ball Singles Houston’s undefeated Nick Hood took advantage of his handicap rating to dispatch Bill Mason (Virginia Beach, VA) in the one-set finals, 7-5. MEN’S 9-BALL SINGLES - (L-R) Derrick Cantu (3rd), Nick Hood (1st) and Bill Mason (2nd)

Other 8-ball singles results included Nick Hood (Houston, TX) claiming a second title – Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles – by a 5-1 margin over Derrick Cantu (Alexandria, LA); Rhonda Wright (Westlake, LA) claiming a title for cajun country via a 4-1 finals victory over Linda Asleson (Billings, MT) in Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles; Hector Morgan (St. John’s NL) clipping Robert Wright (Surrey, BC) 5-4 for the lower-skill leveled Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles division; and Eve Sisneros (La Junta, CO) recovering from a first-set final’s loss to Kirsten Liane (Tacoma, WA) 3-4 to claim the trophy for the Rocky Mountain state by a decisive 4-0 score in the playoff set!

The veterans gained the spotlight as well, with Mike Rohner (Sherrill, IA) taking advantage of a free entry via a previous win in the Lucasi-Hybrid Cues All American Tour to dominate the Men’s Senior 8-Ball Singles – topping his play off with a 5-1 finals dispatch of Victor Tyynismaa (Lake Havasu, AZ) who was relegated to the runner-up position for the second straight year. On the distaff side (Women’s Senior 8-Ball Singles), Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA) emphatically defended her title by eliminating Loreen Toutant (Barrie, ON) in the first set of the finals, 4-0. And in the Super Senior 8-Ball Singles, a former runner-up, Roy Skenandore (Green Bay, WI), escaped a two set finals over Jerry Watts (Shelbyville, KY) – after being down 2-4 and 0-4 respectively – to grasp the title on the hill, 5-4, for his first national title win!

Scotch Doubles 8-ball divisions (man/woman) featured the team of Jessica Frideres/ Dustin Gunia (IA/NE) defending their title in Advanced 8-Ball Scotch Doubles over Gina Knight/Kenneth Brisbon (IL/MI) in one set, 5-1; while Labernalene Store/Steven Stowers (AZ) blanked Mandy Schneider-Hood/Nick Hood (TX) in the finals 4-0 for the Open 8-Ball Scotch Doubles crown.

Team play highlighted the chemistry of league play with local hot shots, “Dick’s Pick” (NV), decisively outpointing Team Canada Eh! (AB) 13-7 for the Men’s Advanced 8-Ball Team championship; and “Dakota Dragon Ladies” (ON) breaking a 12-12 tie in the finals of Women’s Advanced 8-Ball Teams division to click off a 19-12 win over “Ol Tima” (WA) for the title. “Brass Bell I” (VA) took down the finals of the Men’s Open 8-Ball Teams via a one-set 13-10 decision over “4 Shooters & A Blind Preacher” (UT), while “Rat Pack Gals” (UT) kept their undefeated march intact via a 10-6 finals margin over “This Bud’s For You” (OK). In the standard divisions, Men’s Standard 8-Ball Team “Cubetas Leo’s Place” (CO) lost in the hot seat match 8-13, only to regain their momentum and gain revenge in the finals the hard way: a two set 13-12, 13-8 thriller over “O’Leary’s” (AZ); while “Kross Roads Wild Cards” (VA) captured the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Team division at the expense o Read more ...

ACS Updates Formats and Rankings for 2011 ACS Nationals at Tropicana Las Vegas The American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has teamed up with the Canadian Cue Sport Association (CCS) to update and standardize the Tournament Formats and Player Rankings between the two affiliated organizations. For ACS, the biggest change is the adoption of a new top level ‘Advanced’ Division for all Events and a new ‘Advanced’ Player Ranking, which the CCS has used since its incorporation six years ago. Here is a full summary of all the changes which will be effective for the 2011 ACS Nationals, May 7-14, at the Tropicana Las Vegas: 1. Divisions * The ACS will now offer Divisions categorized as Standard, Open and Advanced for all events – Singles, Scotch Doubles and Team – for both 8Ball and 9Ball, where applicable. * There will no longer be a Division category labeled as Master in any event. 2. ‘Bump Up’ Ratio * The player and team ‘bump up’ ratio for both the 8Ball Singles and 8Ball Team events will be set at 12% between Standard / Open and 12% between Open / Advanced. * This ratio is being applied retroactively to 2005. 3.
The American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has teamed up with the Canadian Cue Sport Association (CCS) to update and standardize the Tournament Formats and Player Rankings between the two affiliated organizations.

For ACS, the biggest change is the adoption of a new top level ‘Advanced’ Division for all Events and a new ‘Advanced’ Player Ranking, which the CCS has used since its incorporation six years ago.

Here is a full summary of all the changes which will be effective for the 2011 ACS Nationals, May 7-14, at the Tropicana Las Vegas:

The American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has teamed up with the Canadian Cue Sport Association (CCS) to update and standardize the Tournament Formats and Player Rankings between the two affiliated organizations.

1. Divisions

    * The ACS will now offer Divisions categorized as Standard, Open and Advanced for all events – Singles, Scotch Doubles and Team – for both 8Ball and 9Ball, where applicable.
* There will no longer be a Division category labeled as Master in any event.

2. ‘Bump Up’ Ratio

    * The player and team ‘bump up’ ratio for both the 8Ball Singles and 8Ball Team events will be set at 12% between Standard / Open and 12% between Open / Advanced.
* This ratio is being applied retroactively to 2005.

3. Player Rankings

    * All players will be given a separate Singles Player Ranking and a Team Player Ranking of either C – Standard, B – Open, A – Advanced or M – Master.
* The Player Rankings will be based on the highest of their last 2 Performance Rankings in the 8Ball Singles event and the 8Ball Team event, as follows:

            Advanced

            (i) Finished in top 12% – M Master

            (i) Finished in money but not top 12% – A Advanced

(ii) Finished out of money – B Open

            Open

            (i) Finished in top 12% – A Advanced

(ii) Finished in money but not top 12% – B Open

(iii) Finished out of money – C Standard

            Standard

            (i) Finished in top 12% – B Open

(ii) Finished in money but not top 12% – C Standard

(iii) Finished out of money – C Standard

    * This means that there will now be a full performance history for every player who has played in these two events regardless of their finishes.
* Since your Player Ranking will be based on the highest of your last two finishes, any move up is immediate but the move down will only happen after you come back and finish out of the money in (2) consecutive appearances at the ACS Nationals.
* There will be no automatic dropdown for those with an M – Master Player Ranking.
* A Player’s Team Ranking cannot be lower than their Singles Ranking.
* The ACS will continue to recognize the Player Ranking Lists of both the VNEA and the BCAPL and ACS administration will have the right to assign Player Rankings based on KA – Known Ability.
* The ACS Player Ranking Records will be maintained in an online database accessible by everyone on both the ACS and CCS websites by September 1, 2010..

4. 8Ball Team Event Restrictions

    * The above Team Player Rankings will be applied as follows:

Advanced – No restriction as to the number of A Advanced or M Masters players.

Open – Maximum (1) A Advanced player or (1) M Master player.

Standard – Maximum (1) B Open player. No A Advanced or M Master players.

5. 8Ball Entry Fees

    * A progression has been given to the 8Ball Entry Fees between the Divisions:

            Singles – Standard $125, Open $150, Advanced $175

            Team – Standard $200, Open $300, Advanced $400

6. Original Member Rule

    * The ‘Original Member Rule’ has been eliminated for all Advanced Team divisions.
* The ‘Original Member Rule’ has been eliminated for all Women’s Team divisions.
* The ‘3 Original Member Rule’ will remain in effect for Men’s/Mixed Standard and Men’s/Mixed Open Team divisions.
* The ‘Same League Rule’ will continue to be in effect for all Team events.

7. ACS Hotel Room Voucher Program

    * The economic reality today for the ACS Nationals to remain in Las Vegas and be at a host property like the very desirable Tropicana, is that the majority of players must support the host property by staying there during the tournament.
* If they don’t, then the deal that the ACS struck with the Tropicana no longer works financially, the ACS would be subject to very severe financial penalties and any future Event would be in jeopardy.
* In dealing with this critical issue and to encourage players to stay at the Tropicana, the ACS Board felt it had no choice but to introduce a Hotel Voucher Fee with every entry to the ACS Nationals.
* So, if you stay at the Tropicana, the Hotel Room Voucher acts like a Room Deposit and you will have prepaid a part of your Room Bill.
* If you don’t stay at the Tropicana, the unredeemed Hotel Room Voucher will be used to help offset any financial penalties charged to the ACS by the Tropicana.
* The Hotel Room Voucher amount per Entry at the ACS Vegas 2011 Nationals are as follows:

            $50 – Singles

            $50 – Scotch Doubles

            $75 – 9 Ball Team (3 player)

            $100 – 8 Ball Team Womens (4 player)

            $125 – 8 Ball Team Mens Mixed (5 player)

The ACS is very excited with the move to the Tropicana Las Vegas in early May and complete information and entry forms will be posted on the ACS website – www.americancuesports.org – by September 1, 2010.

Multi-Winners Abound at the 2010 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas

So many divisions! So many winners and multi-division champions! As with each of the six National Championships produced by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – and this year welcoming its new league and championship sponsor: Lucasi Hybrid Cues – the annual spectacle at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, June 6-12, showcased formats that encouraged many different winners…in many different formats…for many different skill levels…along with multi-titlists in the higher-skilled divisions.

Multi-titlists included the likes of: Debra Aarens (Las Vegas, NV) who anchored the Women’s Open 8-Ball Team Champion “Smokin’ 8s,” the same Women’s Open 9-Ball Team runner-ups, and placed as the Women’s 9-Ball Singles runner-up; Dustin Gunia (Omaha, NE) who won the Men’s 9-Ball Singles crown and shared top honors as well with his Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles partner, Jessica Frideres (Fort Dodge, IA) [Jessica also anchored the champion Women’s Open 9-Ball team “Which Witch Is Which” as well]; Christy Goldsmith (Henderson, NV) who won the Women’s Speed Pool Challenge, placed 2nd in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles and 2nd again on Vegas’s “I Had A Plan” team in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Teams; Beth Fondell (Owatonna, MN) who won the coveted Women’s Master 8-Ball Singles crown and placed runner-up with partner and Men’s Speed Pool Champion, Jerrod Frideres in the Master 8-Ball Scotch Doubles category; Edward Mataya who was runner-up in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles and anchored both the repeating champion “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 9-Ball team from Tacoma, WA and the same “Malarkey’s” Men’s Open 8-Ball Team 3rd-place finisher; and Mary Rayner (Calgary, AB) who captured the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Singles title and placed 2nd with partner Brian Bird in the Open 8-Ball Scotch Doubles division.

The Championships also highlighted its share of first-time national champions: Standard player Kassandra Bein (Virginia Beach, VA) outdistancing some much stronger players to take the handicapped Women’s 9-Ball Singles title; Ray Skenandore (Las Vegas, NV) who has improved in the Men’s Open 8-Ball Singles field every year until finally claiming the title in 2010; Jeff Heath (Reno, NV) who has always threatened but never claimed the Men’s Master 8-Ball Singles title until this year; York Haven, PA’s Christine Chamberlain in the Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles; Robert White (Conception Bay South, NF) who probably traveled the farthest to take down a title – that of the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Singles; Pat Mowdy (Longview, WA) who improved on his runner-up performance in 2008 to take down the 2010 crown in the Men’s Senior 8-Ball Singles division; Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA) who claimed the top award in her rookie year in the Women’s Senior 8-Ball Singles; and Milton Strack (Monticello, IL) who – after thirty years of competing in various national championships in Vegas – finally claimed a national championship trophy for his case against a very formidable Super Senior 8-Ball Singles field.

In the Open Scotch Doubles contest, Lexington, Kentucky’s Samantha Patton teamed up with her league mate, 2009 Super Senior 8-Ball Singles champ Madison Adkins, to claim the top spot; and Madison went on to help his “American Legion Post # 313” (KY) team to win the Open 8-Ball Team title after knocking on that door for the previous five years. Lexington, Kentucky’s other powerhouse team, “Mike’s Team/Silver Cue,” almost brought another national trophy home with a runner-up performance in the Open 9-Ball Team division won by defending champs, Malarkey’s of Tacoma, WA. Las Vegas struck again, with the “Tuesday – Rich” team capturing top honors in the Men’s Standard 8-Ball Team division, while Texas claimed honors thanks to the performance of team “Flawless” in the Women’s Standard 8-Ball Team class. Aside from Scotch Doubles honors, Canada claimed further team honors by capturing the Men’s Master 9-Ball Team competition, courtesy of team “Fort McMurray” (AB).

In 2011, the ACS is excited about moving the newly titled Lucasi Hybrid Cues ACS National Championships to the newly renovated Tropicana Las Vegas – a month earlier – May 7-14 ! Players will be royally entertained at this legendary anchor on the southern Vegas strip that is transforming itself into the best modern, mid-priced value in Las Vegas. The ACS looks forward to continuing to build its ranks in 2010/2011 through its twelve state associations and championships and its independent leagues, its Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour, and to welcoming players to its $10,000 added 2011 Midwest 8-Ball Championships, January 20-23 at the Riverside Casino in central Iowa, and to the 2011 ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas in May !! Complete results and winners photos may be viewed online at www.americancuesports.org.

Gene Albrecht went undefeated at the November 21 stop on the Lucasi Hybrid All-American Tour, defeating Randy Matthiesen in the finals. The $500-added event was hosted by CR’s Sports Bar in Coon Rapids, MN, and featured 31 players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes.

The event was handicapped with Master players giving AA players a one-game spot, AA players spotting one game to A players, etc. ACS National Masters champion Albrecht and A-player Matthiesen made it to the A-side finals, but Albrecht was not fazed by giving a two-game spot to vanquish Matthiesen 5-1 to gain the hot seat.

On the B-side AA-player Allen Reich took a one-game spot from Master player Max Krause to eliminate Krause at seventh place 4-1. Joining Krause was Master-player Kim Stigall, who fell to fellow Master-player Dan Voeller 5-1. The next round was not as kind to Voeller and Reich, as both were whitewashed at fifth place by respective opponents AA-player Ryan Wenger and AA-player Brad Vollmers. In the B-side semifinals Vollmers continued his hot hand to dispatch fellow AA-player Ryan Wenger to fourth place by another 5-0 margin. In the B-side finals A-player Matthiesen took a one-game spot from Vollmers and ended Vollmers’ day at third place by a 4-2 score.

Results:
1st Gene Albrecht $340
2nd Randy Matthiesen $200
3rd Brad Vollmers $135
4th Ryan Wenger $100
5th Dan Voeller $60
Allen Reich
7th Max Krause $40
Kim Stigall
