Atwell Avenges Billiard Defeat to Appleton
Glen Atwell Nails Reno 9-Ball Division
by InsidePOOL Staff
Two days after taking second place in the 10-ball division of the U.S. Bar Table Championships to Darren “Dynamite” Appleton, Glen Atwell took down the $6,000-added 9-ball event, defeating none other than Appleton in the finals. Atwell and Appleton are the prime contenders to earn the all-around honors, which will bring the winner an additional $2,000 bonus.
Appleton enjoyed an undefeated run to the finals, defeating strong players such as Shane Van Boening 9-7 and Adam “GQ” Smith 9-8 before meeting recent Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament winner Mitch Ellerman in the hot seat match. He sent Ellerman to the one-loss side of the chart with a handy 9-1 victory and awaited his finals opponent.
On the west side of the chart, Atwell was fighting his way through since 10 a.m., besting defending all-around champ Johnathan Pinegar in a hill-hill match only to eliminate Mark Tadd 9-5, Smith 9-7, and David Vaughn 9-1 to reach the semifinals. There Ellerman was waiting, and though it was a close match, it was Atwell who advanced to the final match 9-6.
Appleton’s time in the hot seat may have cooled him down for the true double-elimination finals, for Atwell was able to capsize the world 10-ball champion 9-4 in the first set. In the second set, the two were neck and neck until the score reached 5-all. But little seemed to be going Appleton’s way, and Atwell capitalized, allowing Appleton only one more rack before winning the set 9-6.
Both Atwell and Appleton are still undefeated in the 8-ball division, which kicked off Thursday evening. A total of 147 players entered the $8,000-added event, which is set to conclude Sunday.

Geln Atwell, who fiunished second in the 10-ball division to Appleton, defeated Appleton in the finals of the 9-ball division.
